Landmark Allston ice-cream place/coffeehouse shutting doors
By adamg on Thu, 11/11/2010 - 3:05pm
Allston Cafe, at the corner of Harvard and Brighton avenues, tweeted today it's closing forever:
It brings us great sadness to announce that Saturday Nov. 13th will be our last day of business. Sat 8-3pm, Sun 2-6pm Open House Goodbye :(
The cafe started as a Herrell's ice-cream shop in 1984, but split from Herrell's last year when the chain decided to bring uniformity to its outlets as part of an effort to go national and the local operators decided to try to keep their quirky local character.
Ed. Note: No immediate word on what will replace the cafe, or whether Don Law is buying the location so he can put in a Brighton Ice Cream Parlor.

Looks like they had a violation...
They had an inspection on 11/2, and while they passed they had a critical food borne illness violation with how they stored their eggs... was this the reason they closed?

so sad
all the hipsters are going to go to twin donuts....fuck!
So sad.
Overrated sh@thole
What a dump.
Place is falling apart and the fact that they use the coffee frother to scramble eggs (and then use it for coffee 2 min later) is f@cking gross. Not to mention the dirty bar rag wipe in between.
Ming!
I always regret to hear about
I always regret to hear about small local operations shutting down - but then again, the place went totally downhill real fast after split with Herrell's. Not very well run, messy, poor selection, very earthy-crunchy grungy vibe.
The collapse started well before the split
Over the last six or seven years, it had gone from Allston-funky to simply gross, and I say this as someone with a high tolerance for less-than-pristine food service places. I wish I could say I'd miss this place, but the best I can do is say that I miss the place it was in, say, 1995. But that place has been gone for years, unfortunately. Let's hope something good goes in there.
I hope JPLicks moves in!

Blame Iran
The Weekly Dig interviews a co-owner, who said the landlord wanted to increase the rent too much; also, the landlord is an Iranian who refuses to talk to women, like the other co-owner, which made negotiations difficult.
Wouldn;t it be more correct
Wouldn;t it be more correct to blame misogyny or assholism than Iran?
Uh-huh
Yes, that's exactly why this place was a shithole that I stopped spending money in, because of the mean ol' landlord. I'm sure he was the one who mandated that the food be lousy and the tables never get wiped down. Those wacky Iranians!
Allston coffee shops dropping
Allston coffee shops dropping like flies! Hopefully not because of flies.
At least we still have
At least we still have Steve's Kitchen...
