New York basketball coach charged with raping boy in Back Bay hotel - in 1976

Robert Oliva, 65, of Lynnbrook, NY, was indicted today on two counts of rape of a child and one count of disseminating pornography for an incident at the Sheraton Hotel.

Oliva was a basketball coach in 1976 and took the victim, then a 14-year-old basketball player, on a trip to Boston that summer, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office says. In a statement, the office says Oliva's return to New York proved his undoing, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office says, because the Massachusetts statute of limitations on child sex abuse - now 27 years - only applies to time the alleged perpetrator spends in Massachusetts.

This is the second such allegation against Oliva, for many years coach at Christ the King High School in Queens.

"The victims can carry feelings of shame and guilt for decades before they're ready to tell what happened to them," DA Dan Conley said in a statement. "Oftentimes, it's only in adulthood that they realize the abuse was not their fault."

The DA's office says the victim contacted Boston Police last year. His arraignment in Suffolk Superior Court has yet to be set.

Innocent, etc.
