Maybe Kurt Russell is up here and doing a sequel called Escape from Back Bay

Tower of power

Because the thought that Boston Police have a mobile security tower like the one parked outside Copley Place is kind of depressing. Peter the Gr8 took the photo and looked around for Snake Plissken.

I've been travelling to the Dallas area lately and I've seen these in a number of mall parking lots. My friend told me that these are placed in areas where there is a high incidence of carjackings. And I also find it kind of depressing.

Isn't the SW Corridor Park the domain of the State and not Boston Police? Could this be yet another turf war among the valiant boys in blue? The Staties might not take too kind the BPD's actions. The peeing contest between these two has kept the Dalton Street bridge over the Pike from being fixed for years.

This isn't BPD or State Police. It belongs to Copley Place mall security. The BPD or State Police ones (if they have them) will be labeled as such. Usually with a badge on one side and "Boston Police Department" or "Massachusetts State Police" on the other. This one just says "Security Tower", meaning it's trying to look official, but really isn't...

That is part of the Southwest Corridor Park, not the mall. Leaving aside why the city and state would allow them to erect it, what good is it doing for the mall?

outside Boston's upscale mall two blocks from and historic Copley Square.

So they spent bucks on this thing and got the tinted windows option so no one would know if it were occupied (and you can bet it isn't because who would want to sit in there?) Must have cameras and is monitored elsewhere.

Because it's doubling as a grizzly bear prevention tower. Judging by the photo, it's working well. Three cheers for safety!

Also note that the US has not been attacked by terrorists since it has been installed. It's obviously working

I am not sure where Copley Place's boundries end but that looks like its on public property. This is like the Taj putting something in the Public Garden becuase they are an abutter.

Read the news and grow up. Don't act like we live in a utopia. Ghetto kids will bust your face on the orange line to take your blackberry or mug you in broad daylight. More cameras, more cops, and people being less stupid is what we need.

The cost of freedom is eternal vigilence. I wish those towers had beams to zap those douchebags that keep trying to sell me on the enviroment or some crap when I walk through the back bay.

Hey buddy, we're all grateful for your tough guy stance. It's anonymous postings like yours that keep America safe. Hu-Ah!!!

Again, why is Simon Property Group allowed to place a security station on my parkland? Got an answer for that?

This isn't a cop thing. It's a Paul Blart thing, get it?

They probably got a permit from the city to put that up.

Says you!

You are right about one thing, though. Eternal vigilance costs us our freedoms.

Hopefully some enterprising thief will hook that tower up to a truck and steal it. That's a lot of valuable scrap metal.

Unless that hut drops to the ground at an alarming rate or the security guards have the power of flight, they'd never get down from there in time to do anything in response to any crimes they see (assuming they didn't doze off up there). They'd need additional guards nearby to do the footwork. Why not just have the tower guards and the ground forces spread out better around the grounds to actually be able to do something?
