Mystery Victorian-type object spotted on Gloucester Street

But what is it? And no, it isn't an Audi S8 grille, so just stop that.

It looks like a bed frame with the center folded up.

It's a wrought iron bed frame that folds in the middle. The ends are a very basic sleigh style.

little person? pet?

Could also be a chaise lounge. Either way, it's the frame for a mattress to fit on. I don't know if it would have anything covering the arms/ends or not.

Looks like a frame for a chaise lounge that folds open. right now it is folded up with the top being the middle and the parts on the ground as the ends. When open the wheels at the top support the middle andthe two pairs on the ground (one seems to be missing) support the ends.

Quilt stand?

Looks a lot like the quilt rack my dad built for my mom, but those are usually wood.

I'm thinking it is a rack for drying coats or blankets by the fire.

Then what's the point of the legs hanging off of the top-middle?

I thought that was attached ornamentation until I enbiggened the picture.

but if so, why does it need wheels?

I'm going to second the idea that it's the frame for some fold up furniture.

For drying your topcoat and spats in front of the fireplace after a rainy drive in your gig.

I really appreciate your thoughts and suggestions on this. It's a weird, Edward Gorey-esque object!

It's too small for a bed frame, I think, although it does look something like a flimsy one. It's only as high as that truck bed, so that would make the mattress area about 4 or 5 feet at most, right? So... maybe it's a child's bed, sized for a toddler, perhaps. But even then, they had cribs, right? Cradles, at least. (If I had had this for a bed as a kid, I'd have had nightmares in it.)

But those casters make no sense for a bed. In fact, the two locations of the casters don't make any sense to me at all. And the legs, or whatever they are, that the casters are on look flimsy and floppy.

Why would a quilt rack have a big, swoopy base that sticks out a couple of feet on either side? And casters?

Torture device is the most logical answer so far!

As others have pointed out, it clearly folds out into something that looks just like an iron sleigh bed.

As for the sturdiness, those round bars could very well keep the feet sturdy in most dimensions. The most troublesome-looking part is whether the middle support would flop to one side or another, with respect to the flat bars, but I bet the bars lock in position so it can't flop.

My thought related to the size not allowing it to be a realistic bed is that its a lounger/loveseat length/size. This would also suggest that the arms would be covered by something...which also makes more sense than it being a bed with headboard/footboard that are exposed vertical iron rungs (snap a foot off in your sleep perhaps?).
