So how's your supply of plywood and duct tape?

The folks at the local National Weather Service office are beginning to keep a wary, capitalized eye on Hurricane Earl:

ITS IMPORTANT TO KEEP IN MIND THAT WE ARE STILL ABOUT 5 DAYS AWAY FROM THIS POSSIBLE EVENT AND A LOT CAN AND WILL CHANGE BETWEEN NOW AND THEN. RIGHT NOW WE ARE THINKING MAINLY A GLANCING BLOW...BUT THE POTENTIAL FOR A MUCH LARGER IMPACT CAN NOT BE RULED OUT.

You can follow the latest Earl advisories from the National Hurricane Service on the Web or via RSS. You can follow tweets from local weather forecasters - who are also now chatting about Earl - at Boston Weather.

The latest Five Day Prediction Cone has Earl veering off to our right, um, east.

The 11 PM update puts us inside of the cone and not all that far from the center line.

Oh yeah - for that hole in the knee of my 3mm wetsuit. I might use some to shore up the tether on my body board.

Then I'll come home and see how the boys are doing with the masking tape on the windows.

What can I say? I've spent a good part of the summer in a losing battle with our air conditioner, which has these accordion-like things to slide to fit the window, only one side's come loose and no matter how much duct tape I apply, it keeps shrinking away, opening up a new slot to the outside hot air and mosquitoes. So obviously, I have duct tape on the mind!

I used masking tape for that this year.

Toss those useless wings out. The next time you put in the ac unit, cut two panels of plexiglass to fit the openings and fasten them in with clear packaging tape. Then you don't have to give up sunlight and the view.

During any weather emergency, I stock up on eggs for french toast, but now they could be more dangerous than any storm.
