For those of us who can't be bothered to give a fuck about following sports in Boston.

When does the game end, so I know when not to be anywhere with substantial population density and risk being attacked by angry or elated drunk people?

There's no limit -- if it's not over in regulation (3 20-minute periods), it keeps going until someone scores a goal. No 'shootout wins' in the playoffs.

That's an "ionic" photo!

Very clever. "Kaz" may know who split the uprights, but he can't spell Varitek.

I once saw him get Many Ortez's last name wrong.

Spelling. It's like an alcatraz around his neck!

Isn't that what the parade is for if they win? And besides, if they lose, you want a bunch of drunken revelers, angry at being denied the Cup, tearing around downtown?

After all, what can one reasonable person expect from a game where some of the people only go for the fights? Menino made the right call on this one. And this from a guy who had his head cracked for drunkenly trying to climb on a paddy wagon after the 86 Celtics win.

"what can one reasonable person expect from a game where some of the people only go for the fights"

I didn't know we were talking about a typical night in the Fenway bleachers.

How exactly would having the same amount of people watching it on TV be so much different?

Except that it would give merchants in the area another chance to bring in some cash?

Totally small minded decision by the Mayor. Again.

I agree. I'd rather that all the drunks and yahoos were in one place where they can be watched and contained, unlike after the last playoff series victory when "fans" went on a vandalism rampage through the Public Garden. I'm rooting for Vancouver to win, preferably in overtime to give the local losers that much more time to drink themselves unconscious before they can do much damage.

happens, and the NHL or the players or whomever demand the parade be held on Friday (like happened with one of the Red Sox parades held two days after the last game), do you really think Mumbles would object to the parade "on such short notice" on the basis of security?

Who's Veritek? Is that the new biotech firm moving to the waterfront? It's funny, but loses a little oomph when you misspell the name of the guy you're making fun of the Mayor for butchering. Or is this like super meta?

Maybe you should work harder on getting the joke before you criticize it.

What makes you think I didn't get the joke? It's funny and funnier when Varitek's name is spelled correctly. My criticism was constructive, yours is inane.

I bet your colleagues love when you offer them "constructive criticism." And correcting an misspelling despite the point being made is about as inane as it gets.

I did this at work with my boss 20 feet away. Gimme a break.

Besides, you're all gonna look foolish when Adam just edits it and puts up the corrected image link that I just sent him. ;)

Thanks for the heads-up, everyone.

FWIW, I liked the Veritek spelling. Brought home the irony. Great Photoshop work.

It,s very funny, with or without typos!

I don't know why you spelled Varitek like that. Just because that's the way Menino pronounces it and it works well in the context of the whole Menino-themed joke you made doesn't give you the right to go misspelling the name of our favorite adultering, benchwarming, NESN sideline reporter fondling "captain." Learn to spell gooder, moran!

So Kaz actually captured it phonetically just right. You people, with your overzealous spelling corrections: you make me sick! Why don't you go hang down at the Boston Commons and the Public Gardens looking for people to niggle at? I mean, for people at which to niggle?

That's the ticket!

Wouldn't Varitek and Veritek be pronounced the same way? It's Varitek as in vary, but phonetically Veritek would be pronounced the same as verify or very, and very and vary are homonyms.

Although, I'm really not hearing a difference between how Menino pronounces his name in the video Brett linked and how his name is actually pronounced.

Very/vary are pronounced the same in many U.S. dialects, but they're different in several of the northeastern U.S. dialects/sociolects.

All sound different to me, but to my Illinois-bred wife, they're all the same.

Hmm. I suppose I've never had much of a Boston accent.

Although there's a difference between perception and production in accents, so it's possible that I do in fact pronounce them differently, but that I'm not capable of consciously noticing the difference. (Cot/caught is the classic example of this, although up here we pronounce them the same too.)

In any case, I blame television for corrupting me with the Iowa-grown sounds of General American English.

I say everybody meet up in Hyde Park after the Bruins win. You know, on the public way outside a certain house in Hyde Park. Bring street performers.

This is the same Administration who allows half a million revelers to vomit and urinate in Southie during the St Patrick's Day parade.

You are all too busy pointing out the misspelling to even notice he named the wrong player in the wrong sport.

We're just closer followers of Meninoisms than you, I guess.
