Hazmat situation at Deer Island sewage plant

The Boston Fire Department reports it sent hazmat crews to the MWRA's Deer Island treatment plant tonight when up to 200 gallons of toxic sulfuric acid spilled around 7:45 p.m.

BFD says the acid "overflowed from a holding tank to a containment area made for overflows" outdoors. The acid, used to help break down sewage, caused no injuries and posed no threats to the public, the department says.

BFD declared the situation under control around 9 p.m.; some fire crews remained on scene to monitor the cleanup by a company called Haz Mat Techs.

Thats was a quick clean up, did they just dump it all into the harbor?

Rumor has it that MassPort instructed them to pump it out onto some endangered clam beds at the end of some runways.

Boston Fire did not clean up the spill, a cleanup company was brought in (mentioned in the article). Most of the fire companies were released around 9, but the HAZMAT officers were there for several more hours with the cleanup company. Also, the spill is reported to have been contained by secondary containment placed around this tank for this very reason, so the hard work of containing the spill was already done for them.

Hopefully, they'll confirm the location next time in case response time is of the essence. The convoy of responding emergency vehicles apparently got lost and first treked through Winthrop Highlands before turning around & heading toward Deer Island. Seeing multiple hazmat vehicles, fire engines and ambulances w/flashing lights and sirens in your back yard was not a comforting site.

Did Winthrop FD respond, too? They could have been there in half the time (or less) and without getting lost.

Similarly, what happens if something happens on the Winthrop portion of Logan Airport and the Logan FD requires the assistance of another dept.? Winthrop FD treks through Eastie?
