NECN: Out with the old, in with the new

Jessica Heslam at the Herald reports on NECN's impending makeover, which features all new talent (see ya, R.D.) and a "more conversational" morning news show featuring a "living room set" and a co-anchor who once straightened her naturally curly hair to see if people preferred women with curly or straight hair.

Meanwhile, Masshole Mommy dishes on her huge crush on Channel 4 morning guy David Wade:

As soon as I wake up in the morning, I all but run downstairs to my tv to see him and if I'm not going to be home for the noon news (he's on every other day because he takes turns with his morning c0-anchor), I tivo it.

Ed note: The final NECN morning show may look a bit different from the video above.

I knew something was up when I tuned in after the holiday break (when I wasn't up early for two weeks) and Mike Nikitas wasn't there anymore. I used to like the morning show because it was actual news delivered with hardly any fluff. Now it looks like it's going to be a show full of fluff with a little sprinkling of news here and there. It will be interesting to see the results, i.e. if ratings improve, or decline.

I'll second that comment, but I'll still wait to see how the retooling is. I appreciated getting LOCAL news/weather/traffic when I wake up -- not Justin Bieber updates. After the alarm goes off, I turn on NECN, and stay in bed for 15 minutes to catch up on things. I tended to get a little annoyed when there was a bit extra non-traffic discussion during the traffic segments. I could only presume it was because there weren't actually any issues to discuss.

I used to have a bit of a crush on David Wade back when he was on Faux 25. Then I realized the guy is a complete tool, and not longer after that, he left. Now I hardly ever watch local tv news. I only recently found out Butch Stearns got canned, which is too bad, because he was kinda hot in the beefy, former athlete sort of way. His name doesn't hurt, either. Woof.

When I saw the photo of their set and anchors in the Globe this morning I too immediately thought of The Onion's Today Now! show. Scary similarity between the two shows -- hopefully a similarity that won't extend to content...

The entire Onion site, including that video, is blocked by my company's content filter, due to supposed violence.

Trading R.D. Sahl for Tonya Mezrich? You have to make that deal if it comes up-- ya just have to. And no disrespect to Mike Nikitas, but he doesn't quite fill up a sweater, you know?

But seriously, this is a huge loss for viewers and probably for the station as well, but a big gain for BU J students-- who can now get trained for a job that they can get fired from when someone younger and cuter shuffles in from Buffalo.

Not to sound bitter though. Here's hoping that he gets back on somewhere, though, and gets to smile and have a big happy "I told you so" moment like Jack Williams did when Channel 4 brought him back.
