No Red Line service between Broadway and Kendall this weekend
By adamg on Tue, 10/25/2011 - 12:03pm
So the T can install an elevator at Park Street. Look for shuttle buses instead.
The T says Green Line service through Park Street will be unaffected.

Wait - it takes a weekend to install an elevator at Park Street, and HOW long to install an elevator at Porter? I hate you, MBTA.
The Park Street elevator project
started late last winter. And nine months later, they're only now actually installing the elevator.
Hardly a land speed record, given we're not dealing with rocket science here.
Even if it was being
Even if it was being installed all over one weekend (which it's not), you do realize that Porter is the deepest station in the entire system and Park is one of the shallowest, right?
Yes well, at least Porter and
Yes well, at least Porter and Park Street don't have to be completely shut down for eight months so it can be done. I haven't been to the Cambridgeside Galleria since last spring because of the Science Park project. Too much of a hassle.
The Porter Square T stop has
The Porter Square T stop has been closed since March, and is supposed to remain closed for a year. I don't understand what kind of fancy, space-age elevators the T is installing, but I look forward to a future of urine-scented accessibility for all.
The Porter Square T stop is open and has never been closed
Why do you think it is closed?
Aaaaand I left out the most
Aaaaand I left out the most important word of all - the *elevator* is closed.
They have to bore a new
They have to bore a new elevator shaft at Porter next to the existing one, while not interrupting trains. That's not a simple task at the deepest station in the system.
Porter is a different
Porter is a different situation for 2 reasons:
1.) The station is 100 feet below ground, and covers a span of about 85 feet, requiring a traction elevator.
2.) The existing Westinghouse traction elevator needs to be removed first before they can install the new one.
At Park St, they'll just be installing a hydraulic elevator in a shaft they crudely cut out of the floor slab near the GL OB steps on the RL OB (Ashmont/Braintree) platform. Chances are the RL platform is being closed because they have to drill the pit (and the hole for the ram if they're using an inground hydro). I'm betting on a holeless hydro though.
I don't understand why the
I don't understand why the Porter project is such a high priority. Why would they make all this effort to add a second elevator to a station that already has one, when there are so many important stations that still have *no* elevator (such as Government Center and Hynes)?
It's a deep station. I
It's a deep station. I believe they are removing the current one.
Yes they are. But that
Yes they are.
But that doesn't explain why the Porter project was a higher priority than other stations which have no elevators.
Quincy to Alewife: Faster to walk?
So this weekend, if I want to go from, say, N. Quincy to Alewife, it'll be train, bus, train, bus? Glad I wasn't planning to do that.
no
bus shuttle between Alewife and Harvard does not begin until 11/5
No, just one bus
The busing from Harvard to Alewife starts November 5, not this weekend.
No, just train, bus,
No, just train, bus, train.
The Harvard-Alewife bus diversion starts next week (November 5).
I withdraw my whine forthwith!
...And look forward to only partially impeded travel this weekend.
As mentioned, the
As mentioned, the Harvard-north doesn't start yet, but if it did, and you wanted to go from Maverick to Davis, it would be train, train, bus, train, bus. Not to mention you may have gotten to Maverick via bus and wanted to catch a bus at Davis. :)
Just imagine if the Orange Line shutdown from Wellington to Sullivan or Community College was also in effect and you wanted to go from Oak Grove to Alewife.... Train, Bus, Train, Bus, Train, Bus.
Okay, enough fun. :)
This weekend's shuttle buses
This weekend's shuttle buses will take Cambridge Street to get from Charles to Park Street. It would make sense to add an exit-only stop at Government Center, to save time for people going to the Blue Line or Quincy Market.
Good idea, except that
it might unintentionally provide justification for the Red/Blue Connector project the T has been trying to shed themselves of for so long.
Bring back the wooden
Bring back the wooden escalators!

The T is closing down service on Halloween weekend? I mean, I know they don't often think things through, but... really?
