Spotted dick

The Christian Science Monitor reports Stop & Shop has decided not to carry Ben & Jerry's new Schweddy Balls ice cream. However, the Dedham store does stock tins of spotted dick, which is some kind of English pudding-like thing consisting of dried fruit in steamed suet. Stop & Shop declined to say why they refused to carry the fudge-covered rum-ball ice cream.

Any store with an international aisle probably carries Spotted Dick.

. . . Food section at the Roache Brothers I go to once a week- beans in tomato sauce, some sort of tea cracker, and a weird blackish condiment were about all I remember Been gone about a year. Nothing in the section struck me as being particularly Irish.

The Heinz products and others in that section are what's sold in Ireland.

I made spotted dick one time while I was in the middle of the Aubrey-Maturine series. Eaten hot it is pretty good. Once it cools it is like eating the old time McDonalds fries cold - the ones which were fried in lard. Grossly coats the inside of the mouth with a gelatinous layer of suet.

IIRC I think there was also a "drowned baby" pudding in the series. Did you choose the lesser of two weevils?

If I want to put Ben and Jerry's Schweddy Balls in my mouth, then I should be allowed to choose whether I want to put their Schweddy Balls in my mouth. By taking that choice away, Stop & Shop is telling me it's not okay to be gay and merry about my choices in ice cream.
