State Police looking for driver of car involved in minor accident before man died in O'Neill Tunnel

State Police say they want to talk to the driver of a car with whom David Dang was talking in the Tip O'Neill Tunnel moments before Dang was fatally struck by another car last Friday.

State Police say they are looking for that driver - and the driver of another car that passed by around the same time - to better understand Dang's death. At this point, State Police say Dang and the first driver got into a minor accident around 8:15 a.m., stopped their cars in the far right lane of the southbound side of the tunnel and got out and talked. Dang was about to get back into his car when an Ayer man swerved into him to avoid a collision. That driver then stayed at the scene, talked to police and has not been charged.

State Police are also looking for the driver of "a light-colored station wagon, possibly a Subaru," that was following the Ayer man's car.

The drivers and any passengers of these two vehicles are urged to call the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit at 617-727-8817 or the State Police Tunnel Barracks at 617-946-3000.

Why bother having cameras if they can't even identify a moving vehicle's licence plate. My iPhone could have taken a clearer photo.

They have technology that can zoom in to read the little registration sticker on the license plate, and can rotate the image 90 degrees so the lab can tell what Dunkie's beverage the driver is sipping on. (But the technicians never remember that until Mandy Patinkin or whoever barks at them to zoom in more.)

This is ~2002 technology. In 2002 the highest resolution camera you could by was maybe a mega pixel. Plus its not cost effective, at the time, to install expensive 1MP cameras in those tunnels.

Plus add up all the damn dust that is probably on the lens of that camera (or the enclosure) isnt helping much either.

Cannot get a clear picture of someone robbing a bank from 6 feet away, how are they going to identify a moving vehicle?

My guess as to why surveillance cameras in general are of poor quality is because of bandwidth issues. A resolution that would be high enough to read license plates would require a lot of bandwidth and in turn you would need lots of storage space.

Wow - both cars could almost fit in one lane.

to ID the car. It's only a matter of time.
The real story is how tragic that this man lost his life triggered by a minor sideswipe. If he had only waited until he was out of the tunnel in a safe place before exiting the vehicle to take a look at the damage. On a dime - it's over. Sad for him and his family.
