Where they really got hit by Irene

Photos of the damage in western Massachusetts, by a resident who spent some time driving around the other day:

I don't mind saying that I cried. I'm still grieving as I write this, for the beauty which won't be back in my lifetime, for the special places I'll never see again, that no-one will ever see again. Places I was so looking forward to seeing this Autumn are now lost forever, joining their ancestral mountain fathers in the sea, perhaps to rise again in a billion years, In Sh'Allah.

My son and I have suggested to his school administration that his school connect with a middle school in a hard-hit area of MA, VT, NH, or NY and work thoughout the year to send things like outgrown clothing and school supplies and winter coats ...

Maybe others can do the same - churches with churches, schools with schools, etc. to offer assistance and support to our neighbors.

SwirlyGrrl, thanks. Our elementary school was flooded, but we're all ok and connected; I suggest you look into helping a town in southern Vermont. They lost so much more, including lives, it's almost unfathomable.

Thanks for caring and acting, and God bless you.

Holy Schniekies.

While I am not nearly as familiar with that area as the writer, I think it is certainly in the top three, maybe my favorite, part of our Commonwealth. Maybe that's why this nugget grabbed me:

"It’s my job to fix this sort of thing; roads and bridges, that’s what I do. But when the money’s not there, fixing things takes a long, long time."

Think about this - an entire portion of the state has been essentially cut-off, and thoughtful people are actually contemplating the possibility that we might not be able to do anything here for a while. And to do so with respect to such a chronically neglected portion of our Commonwealth to boot.

That is despicable and we should all reject any suggestion of the sort.

Mr. Davey, I have previously written on this site that while I thought you are a very bright guy with a very bright future, I just did not think that you had the experience necessary to be an excellent head of MassDOT just yet, as your experience was in only one area under the DOT umbrella. Here is your chance to prove me wrong in spectacular fashion, and to do so in a manner that will restore the already tenuous connection to the rest of the state economy that tens of thousands of people have just lost. And if that means calling out individual members of the legislature and the Governor himself if they do not give you the resources you need, so be it.

Isaacg, the Tea Party premise that any tax money spent on We The People is wasted is intellectually flawed and morally bankrupt. America is richer now than at any previous time in its history, yet we seem to have no resources when it's time to help each other.

It's time We The People followed the money and demanded the "shared sacrifice" which the working folks of America are expected to swallow.

Anyone know how to find an official, updated list of road closures? I haven't had much luck.

http://transportation.blog.state.ma.us/blog/2011/0... has a Google map that isn't very useful. Most markers just say things like "Rte 2W mm14.2 and 14.7 E and W 40 of edge undermined with slope", and don't say what segments of road are fully closed in both directions.

http://www.masstraveler.com/advisories/ has cute little cone icons with descriptions like "RT-9 Eastbound at Rt-9", without saying what is going on at that location. Those markers are all over highways in eastern Mass as well, so they might represent planned road work.

And I can't get *any* useful information from http://mass511.com . All it says is that I-91 south has yellow-coded light congestion across the state, when I believe it's closed in Greenfield. The entire length of I-91 north was green a second ago, and now it's entirely yellow. And it says nothing about other roads.
