Arroyo: Why not public recycling bins next to trash cans?
By adamg on Wed, 04/25/2012 - 2:00pm
City Councilor Felix Arroyo (at large) says now that residents have recycling bins, it's time to extend the idea to streets and parks.
Arroyo is proposing a meeting with Free Green Can, a company that makes money by selling advertising on the sides of its recycling bins, Arroyo said, adding the ads would be "family friendly."

More bins!
More bins not to get emptied by the city so South Enders can complain about them! Yay!!!!
No downside, is there?
I predict this will be the next thing to be WiFied.
I've wondered this myself.
I've wondered this myself. Why can't we have more trash cans and more recycle bins in Boston? Brookline seems to have a lot of them.
Trash can envy?

the problem is not the
the problem is not the purchase of the containers, it is having the man-power to empty them. the city doesn't have enough labor to handle all of the cans that are currently on the street. this is why the city dropped more than $4,000 per unit for the compacting ones we see all over now.
Story from 2006
now, they want to double the number of containers without any increase in the amount of labor. probably not going to turn out the way they want it to...
No point. People would just
No point. People would just throw non-recyclables into the recycling bins once the regular trash bins overflow. I'd rather see a push to get smokers to dispose of their ciggies properly.
You can't have it both ways
You can blame those cigarette butts on the whiny people who complained so that you can barely smoke anywhere indoors now. When there is an ashtray right at hand, say on a table or bar or desk in front of you - you use it. Or even in the rare occasion there is an ashtray outside it has the same problem the municipal trash cans do, overflowing.
Not buying it
I'm not buying this argument at all. Smoking outdoors and responsible butt disposal are not mutually exclusive. Just because smoking is banned indoors doesn't mean the only alternative is tossing the butts on the ground. I think a lot of it probably comes down to pure laziness. I see people toss them from cars all the time, and at least most of them have ashtrays. You won't see me throwing a candy bar wrapper on the ground just because there isn't a trash can a few feet away. The difference is that cigarette littering is still considered socially acceptable for some reason, while most people would scoff at someone tossing any other garbage on the ground.
