Citizen complaint of the day: Dog-on-dog action and the stench of poop in South End park

An outraged South Ender wonders why dog owners refuse to go to the neighborhood dog park instead of befouling Blackstone Square:

Leash enforcement. Now. I've counted 18 dogs running unleashed. One has just mounted and began mating with another, both too far from their owners for it to be broken up before my 6 year old nephew asked me what was going on. This is madness. The fountain is a filthy dog bath, and the stench of poop is in the air no matter which bench you sit on.

Ha! A little over the top about the 6 yr old seeing two dogs humping, imho - sounds like this kid needs to get out more. Since there is a dog park nearby, where dogs are free to run unleashed, I agree that the complaint is valid. I say this as a dog owner that respect is a two way street and picking up after your dog is part of having a dog. If you don't act responsibly you ruin it for all those that do.

I wouldn't be able to deal with living in that neighborhood if there are so many unleashed dogs around. Since I was attacked 3 months ago, I get a little freaked out still.

are a unique species upon themselves. You do not want to mess with them. These dogs are children substitutes for the selfish and entitled citizens of the most fabulous place on Earth: The South End. They live in the South End, thus they are special.

It doesn't matter that there is a half-million-dollar dog park nearby (the OUTSIDE of which somehow is always covered in dog poop). Try telling Biff and Meagan that their dog can't do what it wants. They have a black Range Rover, for goodness sake! Do you not know who they are? Do not say the word "no" to them!

As an aside, that very fancy dog park down on Washington Street is the one where South End yuppies have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to enable their dogs to mingle with the dogs of other rich white people. For $1000, you can purchase a paver with your dog's name on it. Isn't that special?

This while local school kids (i.e., "urban" kids whose parents did not send them to suburban private schools) have no money for books, playgrounds, or even money to put food on the table at home. Yet the yuppies coughed up half a mil for a dog park. I wonder what it must be like for the parents in the "Other" South End who are struggling to feed their kids must feel when they walk by.

Fortunately, its only a block away from Boston's finest dog bakery (yes folks, a bakery selling baked goods - for DOGS), so the dogs of the entitled can never go without. Humans can go without, but not these dogs.

Something is very wrong and very warped here, don't you think?

Same problems in W. Roxbury - check out all the off-leash dogs at Millennium or Hynes Field, not to mention all the people who walk their dogs all over the neighborhood & don't clean up after them.

First of all, dog bakeries have been around for decades... nothing new or shocking about them. If someone wants to spend $3 on a biscuit for Fido and that $3 helps to employ people, who are you to bitch about it?
Secondly, do you live in a neighborhood / town where there aren't residents of different incomes levels? Did you ever stop to think that maybe there are people watching YOU who think you're wealthy by comparison and are self-absorbed, seemingly entitled, and too stuck up to notice their problems?
Most of us have grown up knowing plenty of others had plenty more and are living near others who have much more. Big deal. That's life. Not everything is handed to you on a silver platter. Stop obsessing over Biff and Heidi in the South End, work a little bit harder and maybe you'll achieve the South End brownstone, Range Rover and yellow lab that you seem to be so envious of!

Those upper class privileged white families are the ones whose property taxes go to pay for the public schools, so that part of your argument has no merit.

Back on the dogs:

Video and photo proof that there are plenty of bad dog owners.

Listen, I am a dog owner and lover but as someone else posted it is a two way street when it comes to respect. It's a small percentage of dog owners that do not pick up after their pets. IT's wrong & they do ruin it for the rest of us. That is why when I see it happening I ask them if they need a bag. Just like when I see parents watch their kids throw garbage on the ground with out a care. Polite shaming goes a long way for most.

But if those rich folk want to spend their $ to have a place where their dogs can run free so be it. As for the bakery why does it bother you so much that there is a place for ppl to get their dogs some treats to snack on? I like treats and I go to the bakery to get mine as well.

I do not have children but my taxes are still used to pay for others children & i have no issue with that. WHat I do have issue with is people like you that do not think that dog owners should have any rights whatsoever. I wnat some of my tax $ to go to places where dogs are allowed to be off leash - and not a 6x6 area - big open space & yes, we have plenty of places that this can happen. You all wnat well behaved dogs but you do not want to give them space that they need to run free to get their ya-ya's out and for proper socialization.

Please, just get over yourselves and realize it's not all about you or your kids and for some of us our dogs. As a slighty messed up dude once said "can't we all jsut get along?"

Yes, it's awful that people spend their money how they see fit rather than how you wish they would. If you want to donate, you're free to do so.

I'm sure he'll be scarred for life by seeing animals do their animal thing ... just like ever farm child for all of the time that humans have had domesticated animals has been.

If you can't find a creative way to deal with your own prudery, just say "they're playing tag" and get over it.

Perhaps Boston should look to Brookline for inspiration. We have off leash hours in most parks and persnickety residents that will say something otherwise. Get rid of busing in Boston and there will be more kids running around the parks because people won't flock to Brookline, Newton, Wellesely etc when they have kids.

Dog owners may be self righteous but parents don't play when it comes to unleashed dogs around their kids.
