From duck and cover to run, hide and fight

Back in the day, kids had to learn how to hide under their desks when the A-bombs fell. Things sure are better these days - the odds of a Soviet ICBM barrage are kind of low. But as Boston University Police remind us, we need to be prepared for mass murderers.

in the Nuclear Weapon front. The Russians still have Boston and Worcester keyed into their weapons systems and the ability to launch very quickly.

Only thing that has changed is our relations with them and the medias lack of interest in Nukes. The political climate isn't as tense, but the ability is still very much real. And politics can change.

One Party has actually been working to reduce nukes and actually make the world a bit safer. Meanwhile the other party see's political opportunity in a bit more no-nothing-ism. Reagen would be proud.

Unilateral disarmament makes the world less safe. There are no consequences for using nuclear weapons when mutually assured destruction is removed from the equation.

"Those who beat their swords into plowshares will plow for those who do not." -attributed to many people

And as evident in the US' postwar relationship with western Europe:

"Those who beat their plowshares into swords usually end up defending those who didn't." -again attributed to many people

Maintaining at minimum parity with rival's offensive power is a must. Going beyond that is of quite debatable utility depending on the circumstances.

talking about 100% disarmament?

Whats the point in having enough nukes to wipe out the civilized world 6 times over? 1.2 times should be enough, and managing that nuclear stockpile becomes much more cost efficient and safe.

The biggest threat we have right now is dirty weapons and mismanagement of large nuclear weapon stockpiles. Reducing numbers to something more manageable and smart isn't disarmament.

was made in Houston, not by the BUPD. It says so at the end.

I was wondering where BU got all of those trees and cement-bunker offices.

My dad always said that "duck and cover" was a way of creating a preemptive morgue. Keep all of the bodies in one place for ID and post-bomb sanitation.

Thanks. I didn't think BU made it, but it was interesting (in a sad way) that BUPD decided to post a copy on their site today.

It's definitely sad, but its smart. I haven't watched the clip, but I presume that it presents "best practices" for dealing with such a situation - which, as we all unfortunately know, has happened and will happen again in a university setting.

People will certainly make fun of this, but if I had an 18 year old headed to BU later this month, I would be happy to know that the BUPD is not taking a "this can't happen here" attitude, and that they are at least making an effort to educate people (many of whom have heretofore been very sheltered) on what they might do if it does.

Preparation matters. Just ask anyone you might know who also knew Rick Rescorla.

So as a man, make sure to take charge of the situation! She'll be hiding in the copier room, cowering in fear. Or trying to keep you from leaving as you, Prince Charming, save her. Or giving away your location by crying out in hysterics.

That's right - as a man, it's your job to be cool, calm, collected, level-headed, and strong while your female coworkers are helpless. Grrr!

Also: all baddies wear tactical sunglasses, look like a WWF wrestler, and have black clothing/bags.

for Texas.

If this was a political cartoon, the bad guy would be wearing a sign that says, "Scientific Method," or "Women's Health."

She saved the copy machine from an untimely demise.

She also should have made a fresh pot of coffee. :)

We had this video included as part of a management training class at work.

In fairness, women do tend to be much more 'verbal' than guys, which can be a problem in circumstances where you want dead quiet.

The people who put this video together had input from a variety of sources, including psychologists and those who experienced such events; I'm sure they included the 'hysterical' women because it has indeed been an issue in past such events.

I think they should have empathized more the need to be QUIET. Telling people to silence their phones was a nice touch.

How many shootouts and hostage situations have you experienced?
