Hockey players strutting around BU, enjoying their bareback droit du seigneur

BU released its report on hockey culture along Comm. Ave. today:

Our assessment has shown that a culture of sexual entitlement exists among some players on the men's ice hockey team, stemming in part from their elevated social status on campus. This culture of sexual entitlement, as evidenced by frequent sexual encounters with women absent an emotional relationship or on-going commitment, can also involve unprotected sex. This culture is actively supported by a small subset of BU’s undergraduate population. The absence of systematic processes for sexual assault prevention training for members of the men's ice hockey team, and for BU students more broadly, contributes to behaviors that place many University students at risk. Substance abuse, including heavy alcohol use in particular, can be an important part of students' social and sexual culture. Institutional practices and educational efforts relating to sexual health and substance abuse - for the men's ice hockey players in particular, and for the undergraduate student body in general - do not provide sufficient information or guidance to our students.

Academic performance data show that with some exceptions, the academic performance of the men's ice hockey team falls below that of the undergraduate student body as a whole.

The varsity athletes at ANY university are like that. They get special treatment all through high school as school heroes, they get scouted, they get courted during recruitment, and then the school gives them all sorts of accommodations like priority class registration and special tutors. And then, an arena full of people comes to watch them and cheer!

Think of all of the scandals there have been over the years of badly behaved D1 athletes getting away with all sorts of academic dishonesty and having serious crimes covered up by campus officials. Yet, you've never heard of colleges covering up for the bad behavior of promising biomedical engineers or gifted writers.

Stop treating the athletes like celebrities, and they'll stop behaving like celebrities.

Half of these entitled clowns dont graduate, play pro hockey or are successful. Most will be lucky to drive a bud truck or work for Boston Gas...and the guys from Crimetown...look at Doug MacRay for instance. Small time hood living in FLA. I coulda been a contenda...

D1 athletics is a big cash cow for universities. Schools have every financial incentive to look the other way when it comes to athlete's misdeeds. UPENN is the most recent example of this.

Having strong athletic programs can certainly boost a college's profile, enabling it to attract more applicants than it might otherwise, but, in fact, fewer than 10% of public university athletic departments break even. Here's an old article of mine citing an even older Washington Post article: http://goodmenproject.com/featured-content/the-goo....

but Penn State as well.

As much as those Wharton School thugs get their freak on, Perhaps you meant the team that our President refers to as the "Nittaly Lions?"

This report seems more than a little flawed to me.

When the report starts talking about how this is a "university issue" it sounds like they are trying to shield Jack Parker and the rest of the athletics apparatus. That does not help anyone and it hurts BU as a whole.

That said, while I'm sure that BU's intentions were good in commissioning this report, stupid lines like the following really make one question the purpose of the report and diminish its credibility:

This culture of sexual entitlement, as evidenced by frequent sexual encounters with women absent an emotional relationship or on-going commitment, can also involve unprotected sex.

Have none of these people heard of the "hookup culture" that has been pervasive on nearly every college campus in America for at least 15 years? Lines like this brand some huge percentage of the BU population (and that of every other university) as being part of a "culture of sexual entitlement". Worst of all, it accuses the hockey players merely of the same behavior that so many others are engaged in, when we all know what was going on with the hockey players is far more serious and injurious.

I'll bet there are lots of people in the Penn State athletics department that are wishing that the authors of this report could have written the one they got on the Sandusky scandal.

I didn't even get married 'til I was over 50, I wonder what they'd think of my life up until then. ;-)

I think that we ought not be talking about a "hockey culture along Comm. Ave." I think that does a pretty big disservice to a stand up coach and a group of players who seemed pretty preoccupied with winning another National Championship last year (and 3 in the last 5).

Unless there are several hockey players from BC who have recently been arrested for sexual assault or similar crime that I haven't heard about, let's not paint with so broad a brush (unless we're going to say that BC plays on Beacon St. - there's your out, Adam).

But maybe I should have gone with my first instinct: "area around the Agganis."

BC doesn't own about 90% of the property (cough cough TAX FREE cough cough) along Comm Ave.

I didn't think of BC either when I read the OP, and I used to live across the street from that campus.

Don't they have a recent history of driving their SUVs on train tracks?

The T initially tried to pin on an alleged drunk BC student, only it turned out the trolley driver was speeding?

and the checkered saga of Mr. Dieujuste (Just God?) at the MBTA. I see the open container violation stuck though. I know I got one with MY BC degree. She should be fine.

And I did miss the conclusion to that saga. Thanks Adam!

they will have a tough time replacing Jerry York. The guy is a throwback to the 1950's (in a GOOD way). The kids love him and he gets results, academically and athletically. That was not always the case at BC but York is the real deal.

and woefully under-(or un-)celebrated Boston sports personality probably ever, and we might even be able to extend that to the country at large.

The guy is coming up on 1000 career wins, several national championships, and as mentioned above, commands the respect of his players and everyone else for the results he gets on and off the ice. If you have never met this man, go to a game and try to say hello, or at least watch a few interviews on the web. He's really something, and I hope that no one ever does anything stupid to tarnish his reputation.

'This culture of sexual entitlement, as evidenced by frequent sexual encounters with women absent an emotional relationship or on-going commitment...'

...............Who in the world wrote this with a straight face?

Someone who hooked up with a hockey player, thinking it was more than a hookup?

I like that my generated ad for this blog post was "NHL 13. Make it yours today!" I just might, is there a sexual predator career mode?

First off, it isn't JUST athletes that get special treatment or have this feeling of "sexual entitlement". Actors/actresses, incredibly wealthy individuals, etc (what would Mark Zuckerberg's life been like if he had stayed at Harvard after creating facebook?).

Second, as someone else stated, the "frequent sexual encounters with women absent an emotional relationship or on-going commitment, can also involve unprotected sex" happens at every college with every subset of students these days.

Third, this panel was a joke. They used an incredibly small sample size and even then (34 interviews from 8 groups of people. If 5 people had a negative interaction with a hockey player, that would skew their results.

Even then, the committee came to this conclusion. "Finally, our assessment of team members’ recent disciplinary history did not reveal a pattern of infractions that was significantly different, in type or number, from the undergraduate population as a whole."

So basically, they found that the more popular the student, the more sex they had (without commitment), and the illegal sexual contact the BU hockey team has been accused of is no different than what occurs throughout the entire BU population.

What a waste of money.

"Academic performance data show that with some exceptions, the academic performance of the men's ice hockey team falls below that of the undergraduate student body as a whole."

Wouldn't it be great if there was a way for schools to predict the academic performance of applicants?

Oh yeah, there is: the SAT.

The solution to this problem: Stop accepting academically-unqualified athletes. There are plenty of smart kids who also play sports.

Or stop recruiting for sports altogether. MIT and UChicago are the only sizable schools that take this high road.
