South End trattoria a few weeks from opening; Todd English seeks chef

BosGuy reports that Trattoria Cinquecento, the Aquitaine Group's first effort at cucina italiana, should be opening soon in the South End space once occupied by Rocca.

Meanwhile, Grub Street Boston alerts us that celibrichef Todd English has posted a Craigslist ad looking for a chef to work for him on "a profitable restaurant" in the Boston area.

The Aquitaine Group just lost probably the most talented chef in the city, Keenan Langlois. That's probably why they're looking for a new chef. And Todd English can't have him because Keenan is now the executive chef at The Glynn Hospitality Group's Granary Tavern.

I quite enjoyed how he freshened up the menu at Union while holding down prices in a suffering economy, at a place where surrounding restaurant failures hurt foot traffic. But if he's one of the most talented young chefs in the city, that has yet to be revealed: he's not yet in the same league as the likes of Bissonnette, Maslow, Bond, and many others.

I'm rooting for him, and curious to see what he is able to do, what they let him do, at Granary Tavern. His Glynn Hospitality Group bosses tend to do saloons where food takes a decided back seat to slinging drinks. We're talking Clerys, Hurricane O'Reilly's, Jose McIntyre's, the Black Rose, the Purple Shamrock. Remember the last time you had something memorable to eat at one of these places, where the chef's talent really jumped out at you? Me neither.

I know exactly where you're coming from. Keenan has his hands full over there and if he can turn the food around at the Glynn Group, that'd be a major accomplishment. Hell, it'd be a major accomplishment for him to get Granary Tavern up and running with the handcuffs he most likely has on him over there. I'm sure management has asked him to make "his version" of Shepherd's Pie which I'm sure he'll politely decline.

Aren't Clerys, Hurricane O'Reilly's, Jose McIntyre's, the Black Rose, and the Purple Shamrock all pretty much the same thing?
