Virgina was in national news last week for a bill that required a woman seeking an abortion to submit to having her vagina probed without her consent, which under existing state law constitutes rape, and which earned Gov. Bob McDonnell the nickname, The Vagina Probe Guy.

Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, a Democrat elected in 2006 and chairman of the Democratic Governors Association charged that Virginia stands as the paramount example of the disastrous decisions that are made “when you put Republicans totally in charge.”

“They have seen their Legislature take a hard right turn and that’s exactly the sort of overreach that they saw in Wisconsin, which has the 49th-worst job creation rate; the sort of overreach they saw in Ohio, which has the 30th-worst job creation rate; and also what they’ve seen in Florida, which has the 45th-worst job creation rate,” he said.

He continued, “They say vote for us, things will get better, and then you vote for Republicans and they take a hard right turn, outlawing gay relationships, outlawing women’s rights, outlawing unions and outlawing — throwing all sorts of social issues out there when what the people really care about are jobs and the economy.”

McDonnell, a Republican who was sworn in as the 71st governor of Virginia in 2010 and chairman of the Republican Governors Association, pushed back hard against O’Malley’s claims, responding, “Gov. O’Malley’s the only one that’s got social issues at the top of his agenda. I don’t. So I’m not sure what he’s talking about.

Really, Gov McDonnell? State mandated probing of a woman's vagina seem like a GOP social issue government overreach to me.

Maybe what Republicans meant is that they want to shrink government so small, they can fit it in a woman's uterus.

GOP-controlled governments in Virginia, Texas, Alabama and Pennsylvanian have passed or are considering legislation that mandates that women who decide to get an abortion must submit to a medically unnecessary, government ordered, involuntary, vaginal probe ultrasound. What's wrong with these people and their "slut" shaming laws?

On Saturday March 3, 2012, Capitol police in Richmond, Virginia ordered peaceful protesters to stop on a pubic walkway that led to the Capitol, and then arrested many of them for assembling on the steps of the Capitol - also a public space - to seek redress from government in the Republican Party's war on women.

The protestors were surrounded by riot police and dragged away under threat of the machine guns of a SWAT team.

Richmond Times-Dispatch:

Gov. Bob McDonnell today signed contentious legislation mandating that a woman undergo an ultrasound before having an abortion, sending the measure on a course to Virginia’s law books.

The approval comes amid persistent pressure from women’s-rights demonstrators to spike the legislation, which in its original form would have required many women to undergo an ultrasound with a vaginal probe.

Once the details of the procedure were discussed publicly, McDonnell urged amendments that would still require a transabdominal ultrasound but allow a woman to reject the more invasive procedure.

A scorching debate over the bill thrust Virginia into the national spotlight, drawing media coverage around the country and sparking several protests at the state Capitol.

[...]

Under Virginia’s measure, a woman would be required to undergo a transabdominal ultrasound at least 24 hours before having an abortion to determine the gestational age. If the information cannot be found that way, the woman would be offered a vaginal ultrasound, and may refuse.

The woman would be given the opportunity to view the image, receive a printed copy and hear the fetal heart beat. A printed copy of the image would be kept in the medical record for at least seven years.

Senators agreed to an amendment proposed by Sen. Janet D. Howell, D-Fairfax to House Bill 462, sponsored by Del. Kathy J. Byron, R-Campbell. Howell's amendment exempts women who are victims of rape or incest if they reported the attack to law enforcement.

Anti-domestic violence advocates say the amendment “adds insult to injury for victims of sexual assault.”

“Sexual assault victims have acute and long-term medical needs and no victim should ever be forced to report to law enforcement in order to avoid costly and unnecessary medical procedures when seeking health care,” Kristi VanAudenhove, co-director of the Action Alliance, said in a statement when the exemption was added.
