Citizen complaint of the day: Renovated South End fountain already ruined, doggone it

Woof!

A grumpy citizen barks about the conditions at the newly restored fountain in Blackstone Square in the South End:

I thought with all the $$$ invested in the fountain overhaul, something would be finally done about the habitual leash law violations. Is this the most expensive (and soon to be filthiest) dog bath in Boston? Yes, we all love dogs, but humans want to enjoy the park too.

In theory it's fun to watch a dog jump in the fountain. But it's not sustainable.

Dog Owners or City Bikers? I say Dog Owners, but not by much!

Since the definition of "entitlement" for a cyclist seems to be "insisting on using their right to use the roadways".

But the oblivious jaywalking pedestrians have everybody beat.

I should have asked, who whines more an Urban Cyclist or a Colic Baby?

Or an urban driver?

you ARE clever!

Even anon drivers know the answer is anon drivers.

bicyclists riding on day boulevard yesterday -- not on the triple-wide path or the other smaller path closer to the water, but on the Boulevard that is barely wide enough for cars. That's a demonstration either of incredible stupidity or incredible arrogance. xo

That is literally a demonstration of the rules of the road. I'm not sure what your problem is.

No need to waste money on bike paths seems to be the message then.

but on the Boulevard that is barely wide enough for cars

If it's barely wide enough for cars, it's plenty wide enough for bikes. Maybe the incredibly stupid thing is thinking that cars take up less space than bikes.

It's an ordinary city street. It is not a limited-access highway in any way. If I ride on the sidewalk during warm weather, I'm endangering numerous pedestrians who are trying to take a pleasant summer beachfront stroll.

You should give up your minivan in protest then since your a gas guzzling driver.
Walking is excellent exercise. Try it!

Four people.

Eight thousand miles per year = 2,000 miles per year per person @ 20 mpg

So ... that's only 100 gallons of gasoline per person per year - about 1/5th the fuel consumption of a typical family in the US.(low fuel economy doesn't matter much if you don't drive much)

2,000 miles is considerably less than my total cycling distance in a given year

What was that you were saying about walking? Why bother - bike is faster anyway. Also faster than a car to get to work. (although I do walk a couple thousand miles a year, too - just getting around the city)

Every day, in my neighborhood at least, I see dog owners pick up their dog's crap. I don't care if it's a guy in a suit, a guy in Red Sox shirt, a lady in fancy heels, an old lady with a cane, a dog walker with 5 big dogs on a leash, they are respectful and pick up the crap. Every day, in my neighborhood at least, I see a cyclist ignore pedestrians in crosswalks while said cyclist is not bothering to stop for the stop sign or stop for the red light. These cyclists are dbags and give city riders a bad reputation. You have no business riding on the streets of Boston if you do not know what the hell you are doing.
With that being said, thank you to ALL of the responsible and city savvy cyclists who know how to ride in the city which includes obeying traffic laws and NOT riding in the parks. You cyclists are awesome!

And I can go outside right now, this second, and between the sidewalk and curb find a minimum of 16 piles of dog crap.

It seems that all anyone brings up in these arguments are anecdotes. IF you look at the statistical numbers, the cold hard facts, you will see a very different picture than what you are painting.

Agreed. I just consider all the dog shit smeared up and down wolly beach to be an obstacle course and it adds a little more cardio to my run.

but really it's disgusting.

More drivers feel entitled to ignore the law than anyone else. I see people double parked, parked in bike lanes, parked with part of the car on the sidewalk, not come to a stop at stop signs, not yield to pedestrians, not stop at red lights, text while driving. Boston drivers are known throughout the country to disobey the laws.

200 cyclist run a red light for every drive i see do the same.

Every day, in my neighborhood at least, I see both pedestrians and drivers ignore cyclists in bicycle lanes while said pedestrian is not bothering to stay in crosswalks or obey the DON'T WALK sign. These pedestrians are dbags and give city walkers a bad reputation. You have no business jaywalking on the streets of Boston if you do not know what the hell you are doing.
With that being said, thank you to ALL of the responsible and city savvy pedestrians who know how to walk in the city which includes obeying traffic laws and NOT walking in designated bike lanes. You pedestrians are awesome!

pedestrian is not bothering to stay in crosswalks or obey the DON'T WALK sign.

And it is mostly because pedestrian lights in this city make little to no sense at all. There are at least three intersections in my neighborhood that I can think of off the top of my head where one way streets intersect other streets and are signed No Turn On Red where the pedestrian traffic signals read Don't Walk with no conflict between pedestrian and auto traffic (one must push a button and wait if they want a walk signal). Pedestrian traffic is an afterthought in whatever process is used to decide how an intersection is signalized in this city. If Boston was like pretty much every other major city in the world, there would be no push button pedestrian phases and the walk signals would be concurrent with the green lights at most intersections. Push button pedestrian traffic signals, in most cases, make about as much sense as push button automobile traffic signals.

Now people walking against a light into conflicting auto/bike/bus, etc. traffic is a completely different issue (at most intersections).. Those people should face heavy fines (just as crosswalk runners, red light violators, illegal right on red turners, etc. should).

OMG, I just woke up and this is the first thing I see???

Thank you Adam, for ruining this, my last day of vacation.

the dog should not be in the fountain. But, heck, it is Friday and unless the dog is peeing or pooping, not a biggee.

I find the dreadlocks a lot more offensive than the dog.

up
Voting closed 0

are dreadlocks offensive?

up
Voting closed 0

White dreads on a Komondor, Black dreads on a Puli...oh man they must be more offensive than...uh...than. what were we talking about?

up

Dogs don't usually pee/poop in water. That's what trees and fire hydrants are for !

Cumulative bird poop has got to be a lot worse than doggie footprints.

So true!

Was this person going to bath in it or drink it - is that why they are upset and complained?

I am one of those dog lovers who do think dogs have their place and shouldn't be everywhere BUT I also feel that we pay just as many taxes as others and don't get any benefits for our furry friends.

I don't have kids and my taxes go to parks/schools (which I am 100% fine with) that anyone but us dog owners can use so how about some taxes go for more open spaces with fountains for the 4 legged kind?

Let the flaming begin! :)

Look on the bright side. Some crackhead or homeless person isn't pissing, passed out, bathing, or a combination of all three in it.

Not in Blackstone Square... That's what the Franklin Square fountain is for.

At Copley Square, I once saw a woman pull a poopy diaper off a kid, then stick the kid in the fountain to wash him off!

EWWWWWW! This was a well-dressed older woman of Euro descent, BTW.

Is it really a choice between dogs or homeless? Why not enforce all the laws so everyone can enjoy the public parks safely?

Did we are expect that water to be clean enough to drink? were we going there with a bucket and treating it like a well?

unless that dog is taking a dump in the thing i do not see the problem.

and to jump in on the cyclists/drivers/dog owners debate...

Mopeds are the most annoying thing

up
Voting closed 0

Hahaha good point, unless the dog has made the water so filthy it's not even pretty to look at I don't understand the problem

up

Minibikes/dirtbikes and segways are much annoying than mopeds and vespas.

up

wants to be treated like a car, and then goes the wrong way in the middle* of a one way street is annoying

*if you are on a bike and off to the side, while going the wrong way on a one way street, that is not annoying.
