DA: After killing Amy Lord, man tried killing another woman

Authorities today announced the indictment of Edwin Alemany for the murder of South Boston resident Amy Lord and attacks on three other women - two within 24 hours of Lord's death.

Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley said at a noon press conference that evidence shows that early on July 23, Alemany attacked a 22-year-old woman walking along Old Colony Avenue in South Boston, dragged her into a parking lot by her legs and said he was going to kill her. Instead, he left, but later showed up at Lord's Dorchester Street apartment around 6 a.m., kidnapped her, beat her, drove her around South Boston and Dorchester in her own Jeep, then drove her to Stony Brook Reservation, where he killed her, Conley said, adding he then drove the Jeep back to South Boston and set it on fire around 8:30 a.m.

Some 18 hours later, Conley said, he attacked another young woman on Gate Street, grabbing her from behind and stabbing her repeatedly. Neighbors called 911 and he fled - but then showed up at Tufts Medical Center for a bad knife wound to his right hand that he'd given himself. That was where his victim was brought. She gave a description of her attacker, then "paramedics spotted Alemany, recognized that description, and notified Boston Police," Conley said.

Conley continued Alemany is also charged with attacking a woman on Sept. 28, 2012 on Parker Hill Avenue on Mission Hill. He choked her but she was able to grab his wallet before she lost consciousness, Conley said. This case led to a detective being demoted for failing to follow up on the evidence in the wallet.

Innocent, etc.

What is the connection with Amy Lord and Alemany that led him to show up at her apartment? Was it random? Did he just pick someone's apartment?

I agree, there are way too many unanswered questions.

Never mind, I just needed to read some old Globe articles:

July 25, 2013:
"Lord’s assailant grabbed her as she was coming out of her Dorchester Street apartment early Tuesday morning, then forced her back into the vestibule of the building, where he beat her viciously, the official said."

This crime horrifies me. You should be able to walk out of your apartment without the fear of getting beaten and kidnapped.

Conley said Alemany's MO was to rush women in their early 20s walking alone late at night in "blitz-like physical assaults."

He added that until last year's attack, Alemany's record showed him to be a car thief and petty criminal not given to violence. "We may never know what sparked that change in his behavior," Conley said.

Also, just looking at the top of BDC right now makes me cringe. My prayers go out to Amy Lord's family. I can't imagine dealing with what they're going through.

Why is it considered a demotion to stick a guy who gets to wear suits back in uniform. Isn't this an insult to the hard working men and women who wear a uniform proudly and work in the community. The next commissioner should make all the detectives wear their uniforms instead of dressing like characters from Miami vice.

... there are a number of times when people of higher rank put on a uniform, and they often do so with pride. in this case, the officer was literally demoted. he had been a detective and then was knocked down to patrol officer. that is a loss of rank and status and usually also a loss of pay.

Apparently this officer was not allowed to go forward with this investigation because the woman in that first attack in 2012 did not want to press charges and have to face the attacker in court, so the detective kind of got railroaded on this (to be fair, the source of that info is an angry police officer who overheard a discussion of mine concerning the failure of the detective and interjected)
