Boston to get first Irish-American mayor in 20 years

Connolly
Walsh

The November elections will pit state Rep. Marty Walsh of Dorchester against City Councilor John Connolly of West Roxbury for the right to succeed Mayor Tom Menino.

City returns show Walsh won the preliminary with a small lead over Connolly.

In the at-large race, voters will get to choose between Pressley, Flaherty, Murphy, Wu, Keogh, Jeff Ross, George and Kelly.

In district races, McCarthy and Sanon will face off in District 5 (Hyde Park, Roslindale, Mattapan); Zakim and Nichols in District 8 (Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Fenway, Mission Hill). In District 4, Yancey (who got fewer votes citywide than Althea Garrison), will face Williams. And in District 1, it's LaMattina vs. Gannon.

Like he asked Nstar to pay because the electricity went out once in 20 years in the Back Bay.

Maybe a reverse fine - we should all get a 1% discount on our property taxes.

Yeah right.

Just taking some time to fix the results...don't any of youse worry, we have it covered.

Marty Walsh probably sold the server off for a one time cash infusion.

As of 9.10pm, but seems wrong: now showing less results having been counted, and big swing to Golar Richie compared to earlier. My money's still on Wyatt.

Walsh looks like a quarterback at a div 3 school. He's in the lead? Just because he's a union president?

an uninsprining race will land us with the boring useless union hack as mayor.

great.

Except there will be nothing boring about the many and varied ways in which the unions' mayor will end up giving away the store, enriching his fellow unionists everywhere right before they retire and move to a warm, no-pension-tax state, and leaving the up-and-coming, revived city and any remaining taxpayers to foot the enormous bill. Which won't be paid for a generation or two.

Public-sector unions--there's no room for them in real life. Check out www.psrf.org for starters.

The rainy day fund will be drained to pay off the machine which got him elected and Walsh will skip town before the consequences catch up to the city. Curley did the same thing and Boston when from America's Athens to a laughingstock backwater.

Boston deserves better than a rehash of White's administration. The city has been moving forward since Flynn and despite the cronyism exhibited by Menino he has been a significant improvement over most of the mayors Boston had in the 20th century. It would a shame for Boston to regress and lose all the ground gained in the past decades.

I wish more than ~30% of registered voters actually voted.

I voted at Holy cross in West Roxbury this morning. I was amazed by the lack of crowds. There were bigger crowds and longer lines for the senate and presidential primaries and elections.

My vote went to Connolly and will in the general election. I do not want a union hack like Walsh giving away the city.

Bloke , dude , its is the Holy Name , the Cathedral of the Holy Cross is in the south end.

Your friends would rather line up at Dunkin Donuts than vote. Sad.

Democracy runs on Dunkin?

You're NOT from here! Do you mean Holy Name?

Holy Cross, Holy Name. Same difference to me. A denomination I don't belong to, nor one that I care for.
Yes, I do live in Rozzie. Every Saturday evening the congregation of this parish gets to double park on Centre Street, together with a cop directing traffic. Talk about special privileges. I sincerely doubt the same privileges would be bestowed on that church if the congregants were of another ethnic group or religion.

... unawareness of the name of a local "landmark" would seem to suggest pretty superficial ties to you current residence (even if you HAVE lived in Roslindale for 7 years).

Any other religions you don't like? How do you "not care for" a religion, at least any mainstream religion?

As for double parking etc. - ever drive down Columbus on a Sunday morning where the congregants park in the median? Drive by the temple on the Riverway on a high holiday? I can assure you there are parking exceptions for almost every house of worship tight on parking. I think it's kind of nice that we live in a society where we support interfaith parking.

In his concession speech, Rob Consalvo praised the winners and thanked his supporters. And he vowed to keep up the fight for some of the issues he pushed in the campaign:

You haven't heard the last of those rubber sidewalks!

were a great feature piece on Rob Consalvo's website. I'm sorry he won't be in city government next year.

fades away! As someone who grew up in Roslindale, Rob hasn't done much in the decade he was paid to do nothing.

...hasn't done much in the decade he was paid to do nothing.

Does that mean he did his job almost perfectly?

Very happy that John Connolly made it to the final two. Marty Walsh has worked hard to make Boston better, I just think John will be a step forward and represent all of Boston, not just the unions.

You all made a terrible mistake though in not putting Catherine O'Neill and Althea Garrison in the final eight!! So close!

Does not matter which Irishman wins, if he does not perform well enough for the people of Boston in the next 4 years, drunk on the job, no matter what the situation is, then it will be time to elect someone new, in the next mayoral race,.

Marty Walsh won because hard working, blue collar, middle class, tax paying Americans are sick of being abused by the Greedy Rich and Lazy Poor. Menino catered to both, but no other candidate could appeal to both extremes, and as a result, Marty Walsh is finally going to give the middle class of Boston a say again! The anti-union rhetoric is useless, a change is coming...

Yes , indeed , hard work is the ticket , there are no short cuts to success . The human spirit is re-kindled by the sense of accomplishment, even if it is the digging of the perfect trench in the ground for the pipes ,and there is no greater feeling than having money in your pocket from your own earning of it. I heard Connolly in his speech talking of the education system, and I am always suspicious of the educators fiddling with it. Haven't they done enough to it over the years, perhaps they should just hand out the arithmetic tables , with better results ? People need good jobs, ones with dignity and a sense of being productive. You have to earn the money before you can spend it, figure it out , look at the old arithmetic tables,it will show that . And its a shame there is so much anti- Irish and anti- union sentiment out there, it would not be tolerated if it were directed to other groups as such. America only works when America works , take that to the streets .

Maybe people in this city are sick of the Unions and Irish shoving everything down their throats.

Hardly the case. Unions were created to insure the dignity of the worker. Good wages are part of this. Looking for work was what brought the Irish to Boston, and America . It seems dignity for the worker , and this trait in the Irish offend you. Perhaps you are an elitist with a false inflated sense of your own self- worth. I guess with the election results, you will be forced to endure this unpleasantness. But America is wide open with opportunities for people that want to work, don, lig an doras bhuail t tú ar an asal ar do bhealach amach.!

And now the unions work diligently to keep their members on the job site and people of color and women off.

Some of the biggest advocates for "people of color" are...UNIONS. Beat it, guy.

As we all know, hard working blue collar middle class tax paying Americans don't live in Boston because they can't afford it.

So, it was probably the working poor who voted for Marty Walsh thinking more of themselves than they are.

Who lives in Hyde Park, Roslindale, West Roxbury and some sections of Dorchester and Roxbury? Last time I checked there were plenty of hard-working, tax paying middle class families who are fed up with the current situation and voted accordingly, hence the current candidates and not one of the empty talk windbags.

Affording to buy a house or pay 2K+ in rent is one thing. Affording to stay in the house your parents paid off is another.
