Fund set up to help guy whose car was flipped last night

Chad Duncan was the unfortunate owner of that car that got flipped on Boylston Street last night. Somebody's set up an online fundraiser to help him pay for the damage:

Boston's better than that. Especially after this year, no one who truly loves the city of Boston should ever engage in willful wanton destruction. Let's band together and help Chad pay for what these idiots did. He shouldn't have to.

Every time someone sets up one of these, how do we know the money goes to the person in need? It's quite possibly a scam. Who is Bobby O'Neill?

Frankly, it looks like Chad will be able to recover damages through civil suit. There's plenty of evidence.

But even if you do feel charitable, which is all well and good, please verify this fundraiser before using it!

Adam?

P.S. I agree with anon about helping the two people who were injured by the drunk driver last night. Machines are replaceable. People are not.

Also, insurance? Yeah, he's going to be out some money (depreciation and a deductible) but I would like to hear how much money he really needs before donating.

There also seems to be a lawsuit here against the BPD SWAT team who stood by and did nothing.

Per boston.com, he's out a good $2500 - $1000 for his deductible and $1500 in new lease fees (the car that was destroyed was a lease.)

absolute certanity that these bozos wouldn't have flipped the guy's car anyway even if the SWAT team went after them.

The guy should sue the bozos who flipped his car for actual damages that his insurance won't cover (and, BTW, consider getting a different insurance company that actually understands what "not at fault" means) . But please don't fall into the trap of making more lawyers rich at the taxpayer's expense by demanding an undeserved lottery payout from the City.

Assigning fault happens when a car crashes into something.

Most comprehensive (vandalism) policies have a deductible. You can't blame the insurance company for deducting the deductible from the payout -- that's what deductible means.

I'm betting that you either haven't obtained or bothered to look at a policy in many, many years, given your comment.

He's lucky they cover anything at all, as "riot or civil disturbance" is usually included in "things that we refuse to cover at all".

Never met him, but he's been around for awhile, so he seemed legit.

I, too have doubts about donating to people that one doesn't know personally at all, no matter how legitimate the cause may be. One never knows who might get hold of that money, or what may be done with any information enclosed on or with a check, if one gets the drift.

Seriously? A fund for a guy whose car will get covered by insurance?

How about for the two young people, one critically injured!?

I'm all in favor of funds for both - why don't you start one for the two cyclists?

What's stopping you from setting one up? Just because something nice is happening for this guy doesn't mean the same can't happen for those cyclists.

The fact that a fund to cover the $2500 the owner is out on his leased car sprung up before something to assist for two people who were very badly hurt...and that the Globe bothered to talk to this guy, but not the injured cyclists?

I imagine they are not up to talking to reporters.

Rather than complain what one person chose to do, why not choose to set up a page for the cyclists? There are tons of fundraising pages on that site for people who were sick or injured.

No one person can help every last person or cause that needs help. Celebrate when people do actually make an effort and fill the need when you see a gap. No need for this to be a zero sum game.

Sorry I bothered you, person who complained about people helping out the guy whose car got flipped but not injured cyclists. Are cycling advocates going to set up a fund for the people who got shot in Roxbury and Mattapan this past week? If they were riding bikes would you then care?

That's the great thing about sites like gofundme.org. Anyone can set up a fundraiser for any reason, and people can donate if they want, or ignore it if they want.

So set one up and post it here!

We know who the asshat who injured people is, so we know who to hold accountable-and victims know who to sue. I'm not an insurance professional, but I know I have bodily harm and property damage aspects of my own policy.

What we don't know (yet) is who flipped this guy's car over, but someone wanted to be cool and help out. I don't know why the other incident even needs to be brought up in a comparative manner.

LOL, ya right. Are we going to donate to a fund every time someone gets their feelings hurt, too?

You're not, obviously.

such immature, destructive behavior as flipping people's cars in the heat of excitement during a home-game Red Sox Win (or any time, for that matter), is totally inexcusable and unacceptable. The fact that people can and do act that was is beyond belief...and disgusting! One can realize that and still acknowledge the injured cyclists who landed in the hospital at the hands of a drunk driver, if one gets the drift.

What a perfect ending to this would be if Ortiz / Sox gave this poor chap the truck (or another vehicle), and let him ridn on the Duck Boats while we're at it! Someone needs to call Dr. Charles!
