Citizen complaint of the day spawns citizen complaint of the day

Some cranky citizen took a picture of the giant mural in Dewey Square, you know, the one of the kid with the shirt wrapped around his head and filed a complaint with the city:

Terrorist mural on the front of the building across from the Federal Building. This is a disgrace and should be removed or painted over immediately. With marathon events last month, this is extremely offensive!!!

Well, it seems I'm not the only person who browses Citizens Connect, because an hour after this complaint was filed, another citizen filed a complaint about the complaint:

I applaud the people who work for the Mayor's 24 Constituent Service and deal with the deluge of reports, especially invalid, irrelevant, and nonsensical ones such as this. The subject of whether or not this mural actually depicts a terrorist or not received extensive media coverage a while ago (According to the mural artist, it does not.). I do wish that the filer of this report would make better use of his/her time. Thank you.

I doubt it would be a huge loss to humanity if this person were to expire of their self-inflicted case of the vapors.

Is that a good enough excuse to paint over it?

It brings some color to the area.

Honestly I wish they did this more with large, underutilized spaces. Especially ones where graffiti typically is the art of choice.

That said I'd be open for allow a "blank canvas" and having it changed once a year by someone new. Lets get more public art going and keep it new.

If the ICA had branded that mural better then maybe people wouldn't think that Homer Simpson has become a terrorist.

I do think it's time to take it down. Maybe the MFA could use it to paint a picture of a Samurai to show off their new exhibition.

I believe the current mural is supposed to stay up until November. I hope it comes down promptly and is replaced by something much nicer.

Do you really think they'll promptly remove that mural when they said they would? I suspect we're stuck with that thing ad infinitum. How long was that ad for some long forgotten movie from 2008 flickering away in the tunnel between Central and Harvard on the Red Line? Yeah, I know the T isn't the ICA, but it is indicative of the way things are done around here. That unattractive Ninja Muppet (or whatever it is) mural will be there until it rots, fades and the paint peels off.

I have wrapped or tied a t shirt around my head for ever. As a carpenter, down south, it protected my head and ears and neck from the sun, on hot days it would get wet and help with evaporation cooling and yes I would pull it around my nose and mouth if it was dusty work. Oh, it also kept a bunch of crap out of my hair. The guys use to kid me and call me "the sheik" and the girls though it kind of sexy. I got many photos rather it be at work or at the beach. The keffiyeh has been around long before it became a terrorist act to wear one. If we had terrorist in fedoras or cowboy hats, or even a baseball cap would people want to ban them? Still doing it at 60.

Those dickheads who bombed copley square were wearing baseball caps.

And for the record, I agree that mural was before and remains completely harmless. It really does look like a Simpsons Character with a shirt on their head. ooooh scary.

has this person been for the last year? Is this really the first time they've seen the mural? What an imbecile.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Moronity is apparently everywhere.

Maybe he can a make another magnet out of the mural! Or maybe he can use his crack investigative skills to find out if this was paid or by the DTA, or as he calls it the Department of Terrorist Assistance!

The welfare-terrorism link has been an issue in Europe for awhile. Plenty of hate spewing Imams have been collecting welfare and telling their radical flocks to collect benefits as an infidel tax as part of sticking it to non-believers.

This isn't Europe, that giant cartoon isn't a terrorist, the artists aren't Moslem and the Marathon bombers didn't wear kefiyahs, but, nah, it's all part of the International Conspiracy to Enslave the West.

The West isn't going to be enslaved. It's committing slow demographic suicide (below replacement level birth rates and unassimilated immigration) and won't exist in another century other than background genetics and culture absorbed by the other growing civilizations. In another few hundred years the globe will probably be a fairly boring and generic place with a semi-homogenous culture and genetic makeup where everyone looks Brazilian.

Brazilians are pretty delightful.

They're also even more of a multi-ethnic society than we are, so saying we're all going to look like Brazilians is like saying we're all going to look like Americans - Brazilians do not all share the same skin tone.

But, then, you don't really mean "European." You mean white people. Specifically, pasty white people well far away from the Mediterranean. Sort of like back in the day when Thomas Nast warned us against the inferior genetics of the Irish:

Nast on the IrishNast on the Irish. Source

Somehow, vast influxes of people from places that didn't speak Germanic languages didn't ruin America in 1900; why are you so sure it will happen in 2050?

How is the below-replacement-level birth rate a problem when we have 104,000 children in the US waiting to be adopted? Let's find homes for the existing children before encouraging people to reproduce at higher rates than they prefer to.

It's not really a issue but a fact that in that a few generations several ethnic groups will cease to exist other than trace genetics through intermarriages. Humanity drifted genetically for tens of thousands of years to adapt to regional climate and dietary differences. These adaptations create homogenous populations suited for particular regions and limited travel eliminated genetic diversity. In the span of a few hundred, thanks to modern travel and technology, humanity will once again achieve homogeneity through intermarriage.

Ironically diversity on a global scale interacting and interbreeding will result in genetic homogeneity.

Cultural homogeneity on the other hand is something which may never happen.

That mural is awful. It's bad art. It doesn't even make it as a cartoon. And while it may not be terrorist, it absolutely DOES invite such comparisons. When does any kid ever wrap a shirt around their face and mouth that way? And if they did, their helicopter mother might say something like "take that off, you'll suffocate!".

"When does any kid ever wrap a shirt around their face and mouth that way?"

When they are spray painting things in a hot climate it is necessary to wrap ones face to not be overcome with paint fumes.

will wake up to the fact that the highway between Canton and Peabody is now Interstate 95, and that the highway between Braintree and Canton is now part of Interstate 93. Just like the big green signs and enhanced mile markers along the orad say it is.
