Irish eyes smiling on Irish-American candidate for mayor - no, not that one, no, not him, either, the other one

The Galway Independent finds an area man who used to live here to exult that state Rep. Marty Walsh would make a great mayor, at least as far as Galway is concerned:

If he were elected Mayor of Boston, I think he would try to push and pursue whatever kind of collaborations and links between Galway and Boston that he could. He would be great for Galway, there's no doubt about that.

Yeah cuz if it's one thing we don't have enough of in Boston, it's Irishmen to hold signs for Marty. That is until a few no show jobs open up over in Dudley Square. Wake up Boston.

Angelo - Good job. You beat the over/under I had to myself for 60 minutes from the posting of this article by Adam for someone saying something negative about the Irish.

As an Irish American I apologize for any bad thoughts you have about me and the rest of my potato eating, beer swigging, pope obeying, wife beating, molotov cocktail throwing, hunger striking, no show job holding, bog trotting descended arse.

I know we have been bad for this city, state, and country. Please forgive me and my fellow Hibernians for all our transgressions.

Click on the link, then click on the front page of the Galway Independent and look at the photo that says "Arts figures honoured at civic reception". The middle age woman with the robes and the chain that would make Rick Ross blush is my aunt; Terry O'Flaherty, the mayor of Galway.

Don't tell Angelo that there are Irish politicians in Ireland and here who give up their own time and attend meeting after meeting on governance so she can give out no show jobs to Notre Dame sweathsirt wearing mouth breathers, He may just lose his complex, adroit mind.

John Costello— I'm sure there are good pols on both sides of the pond who do it right.

BUT Marty Walsh— who has been double-dipping for years and pulls down 240-large for his "service" while his union systematically blocks everyone else from a day's pay— ain't one of them.

Howie Carr writes one column about Walsh's gluttony and suddenly he's giving it all up?? A real profile in courage.

I'll happy to vote for an Irish guy. I'm with the one who's actually taught in our schools and is sending his own kids to BPS - and isn't spending his whole day trying to pile more cash down his gullet.

Connolly is the next mayor. Marty should plan a long visit to see his Galway cousins next year.

Angelo made a sweeping racist comment blanketing the Irish in this city. There was a furor on this forum last week over some comments about Judiasm which bordered on the Cuban Missle Crisis level of tension. Put down the Irish in this city, the reaction from posters here with one exception is meh. There is a double standard in this city with it being ok to make fun of people for being Irish. The reaction to many people who are not Irish when someone like me points it out is, so what? However, if the Irish start to make fun of some other group, then we are being racist.

Marty Walsh hasn't a prayer by the way. Dorchester has not placed a mayor since I think Henry L. Pierce in the late 1800's and he had huge money for the time. I drive the SE Expressway many afternoons, the 537, 7, 33, and other union stickers on pick up trucks driven by the workers which make up Marty's base head south of the Neponset more than they stay north of it.

A quick reality check, Mr. Costello: as of my posting now, this post is a day old, and mine is the 7th comment. So far there's only one comment you might construe as anti-Irish. I don't think this blog is so bad. In the same exact place where this guy dished it out, other people (yourself) dished it back.

More interesting to me is the claim that underlies that first post, namely that our friend the Representative will be handing out construction jobs for votes this fall. Is that true? Does anyone know if that's true, and, if so, what is the mechanism is for that? It's a little distressing considering that we all know the long history of patronage in this city.

"Angelo made a sweeping racist comment blanketing the Irish in this city" What is this, the 1860s? The Irish are not a different race! Or are you trying to stir that pot again?! Your insensitivity disgusts me. Next thing we know you will be tossing around the "W" word that has been used for so long to keep down caucasians of anglo-saxon herritage!

On behalf of all of our fellow Irish Americans, please lighten up. I would prefer that people sterotype us for being jovial and gregarious rather than for beeing whiney.

All of us are humans. So, if that's the criteria, NONE of us are from different races.

Once folks start breaking things down by skin color, or where somebody's ancestors came from, or any other sort of identifier, then it's all fair game. And Angelo opened the can of worms, not John Costello.

My comment about the Irish not being a differnt race was a play on the fact that the commenter who was accusing John Costello of being "racist" implicity suggested by use of that term that the Irish Americans, at whom the alleged "racist" comments were being directed, were a "race," which is something that bigoted nativists used to insist upon in the 1860s when there was, in fact, prejudice against the Irish (to be distinguished from Irish Americans against whom there is absolutelty no prejudice whatsoever). So you see, the person making the accusation of racism was himself, if taken literally, guilty of using racist lingo and, what's even better, against his own self-identified group who he was trying to defend. I think this might be irony, but I will not risk labeling it that lest there are English majors about to chastise me about the real meaning of the term. This is a sad bunch of so called Irish Americans we have here who do not understand a joke. I believe our Irish ancestors would be rolling in their graves if they could see what has happened to us. Lets just go back to being Americans.

Actually, John B. Hynes was from Dorchester. He was the mayor before Kevin White.

But I agree that Walsh won't make the cut this year due to his union hackdom. It's just a bad idea to put the fox in charge of the hen house. And he'll get creamed in black wards by the likes of Consalvo and even Connolly.

That coment by "Neponset man" and his troll "Port Norfolk guy" that Marty will get creamed by Consalvo and Connolly in the wards dominated by African American voters is an example of pure idiocracy.

Why is everyone discounting Charles Clemmons, 106.1FM founder. He has a huge fan base. I'll tell you why it's because he is African American and all of the traditional critics of media and the blogs are intentionally ignoring him. Charles Clemmons has a real shot at doing well like Mel King.

Marty Walsh is not going to do as well as anyone believes because he's become one of the 1%.

Walsh makes $250K a year. Walsh is a phoney and a fraud and does NOT care about the regular union worker. He only cares about becoming rich.

I don't really care if it's Irish, Italians, black, whatever. And I like Marty- and overall he's been a good state rep.

But he won't get my vote: Could there be a worse choice for Mayor of Boston at this moment than a guy who makes a CEO's salary to ensure that every union in town gets a sweetheart deal.

Menino was bad enough with holding a tough line with the unions. And he took a beating from them just the same.

And I get that it's the unions job to ask and push hard- fair enough. But why on earth should we put one of their top leaders in charge on the other side of the table. That's just nuts...He'll owe his job to them if he gets in and that's on top of all of his family conflicts with the unions, etc.

I'd much prefer a Connolly or Consalvo who've shown a willingness to deal fairly with labor- but not give away the store.
