Five-alarm fire destroys South Boston church

Fire at Albanian church in South Boston

UPDATE: The Boston Fire Department says six firefighters were taken to local hospitals for fire-related injuries and that damage is estimated at $1 million.

Firefighters are at the Albanian Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist, 410 Broadway, battling a fire that has sent a column of thick black smoke into the air above South Boston.

Firefighters were ordered out of the church around 9:30, shortly before a ceiling collapsed. Commanders set up a "collapse zone" around the church should the entire building collapse.

Looks like this is St. John the Baptist Church. (Also looks like you updated your details just as I was posting!)

I love this building, with it's unique-for-Southie architecture. Makes me feel like I'm in the old world walking past it. I hope the building isn't a total loss, as the person quoted on Boston.com says.

There were more real estate agents and developers down West Broadway than there were firefighters.

St. George is still standing - perhaps they can absorb the displaced parishioners.

Why wouldn't it be? They are about 3 blocks apart. Unless you mean they haven't been made into condos yet.

There's Holy Trinity on D Street as well. Southie was the only neighborhood in Boston with three Albanian Orthodox parishes, which makes the loss of one even sadder.
