Times like these demand candidates like Capraro and McCormack

Capraro

When and where would you have found a rundown Boston block plastered with posters for Charles Capraro and Edward McCormack? The folks at the Boston City Archives know, of course, they always do. See it larger.

Well I recognize the Pontiac, maybe a 55. And Capraro, a North Ender. So Atlantic Ave and Richmond street , the North End 1956.

Agreed on the North end, but unless the buildings have since been torn down it's not at Atlantic Avenue & Richmond Street. The egg-and-dart molding above the ground floor is a bit unusual, as is the brickwork.

That location was just a dart thrown, i think it is either on Atlantic or Commercial and its intersection of another street closeby, just a feel , not exact.

Definitely the North End. The poster for Nazzaro dates it a bit later. I'd guess 1960.

I can go for that, the Pontiac looks a tad beat up too!

There appears to be an address of 1564 on one of the doors. Given that others indicate Capraro was a rep for the North End - my guess would be 1564 Commercial - as that's one of the longest streets in the North End and might have a number like that, although I can't find any record of a building with 1564 on any major North End Street.

As for year - I'll go 1961 - the Pontiac seems to predate that but more importantly McCormack ran in 1959 and the signs also look a little weathered - maybe a year or two, but since others already guessed 1960 I'll add a year.

Curse you Boston Archives! Looks like we may be foiled again.

North End, probably 1961, not earlier than 1958.

Car
Model: 1955 Pontiac Laurentian. 1956 looked similar but had script "Pontiac" on trunk.
Plate: 1957. Numbers only, separated by a dot, on a dark, probably black, background. Looks like "Mass 57" at the top.

Posters
Edward J. McCormack - running for Attorney General. Won Democratic primary in August 1958 but was then named AG by state legislature on September 11, 1958 after the sitting AG died before the general election, which McCormack won in November.
Charles Capraro - running for second term as State Representative. Served as State Rep for Suffolk 3rd District (North End) from 1953 to at least 1960. Would have run for second term in 1955? Ran unsuccessfully for State Senate in 1960.
Michael Nazzaro - won a seat in State Legislature from North End on third attempt in 1958. Served until 1964.
Frederick C. Langone - served on Boston City Council from North End in 1961 and again from 1964 to 1983. Don't know if he ran for office before 1961. Note that Langone poster on top of McCormack poster.
(There are tattered remnants of what might be "Whittier Governor Republican" posters which could have been from Republican Lieutenant Governor Sumner Whittier's unsuccessful run against Foster Furculo in 1956. That looks like his last Massachusetts campaign)
(There's also a remnant of what looks like "Luce Lieut Gov". Robert Luce was Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor but in 1912-1913 and died in 1946 so unlikely it has anything to do with him. Can't find other reference that fits).

...we should have anonymous cowards posting here all the time. They are a treasured resource...

I tried to find a 'Lucey' for lieutenant governor but had no luck. The first floor is not the only beat up floor. The second looks a little rough. I dunno. North End somewhere but not facing the ocean?

Oh. Let me shoot from the hip...60 Leverett Street on May 19, 1958.

Answer popped up as I was digging around the intanets.

That's a lot of excellent details, but the Zak is still probably disappointed that you didn't detail the myriad failures of the candidates to comply with open meeting laws, etc..

Thanks for playing, everyone! Really good guesses this time!

This is 60 Leverett Street on May 19, 1958. This address does not exist anymore and was demolished during the West End Urban Renewal project.
