Car, ambulance crash in Back Bay

UPDATE: Police report the driver of the car died.

Jil Murphy reports it happened around 11:30 p.m. on Monday at Fairfield and Beacon streets. Stanley Staco reports serious injuries.

This is the same intersection where two pedestrians were killed in a crash in June.

People drive this stretch of road like they were on the autobahn. Same with the assholes getting off 93, down Charles St. onto Beacon and Arlington, or coming off Storrow onto Beacon and Arlington. Worse on Fridays, weekends, nights, a lot of them are high and/or drunk.

Beacon St needs to be reengineered. I think it should shed a lane as going three wide just incentivizes faster than the necessary speeds. I drove this from Charles St to Mass Ave every day home from school and I can't tell you how many times me or other cars on the road sped up to beat a yellow only to come to screeching halt at the next. Add in the double parking on both sides of the roads by delivery trucks, taxis, cars and you have an environment where people want to go fast (three lanes would imply its possible), want to beat lights, but have to cut back and forth to avoid obstacles in their way, with little time to account for pedestrians or bikes. This obviously applies more to the July deaths, but there's no need for Beacon to be configured as such, especially when Comm Ave is better tooled to handle the east-west traffic (even if marginally more inconvenient to reach).
