My daughters have asthma, one of them severe. We made our usual September ED visit to Children's this week and it was much busier than usual. Thankfully, my daughter's flare was run of the mill and after a few days, she's showing signs of improvement. This is a scary virus for those kids who have asthma.

The ED was already practicing infection control for the virus on Wednesday, so I figured this announcement wouldn't be too far behind.

This virus was first identified a half-century ago, but it only recently has emerged as a common strain. There is some work underway at the CDC to see if it has substantially mutated or if there are other reasons why it suddenly popped out.

The best methods of infection control in the real world are, as usual, covering sneezing and coughing and staying home for the first two days of an illness, and keeping your kids home if they are sick. Also, kids who get seriously ill with this tend to go downhill quite fast - so if your kid has asthma and cold symptoms, keep a close eye on them.
