Storrowing narrowly averted; road now jammed solid

A bus driver who decided, what the hell, and plowed right through one of those CARS ONLY signs discovered just in time that the BU Bridge inbound would not let him pass. Naturally, at rush hour, this was a bit less than optimal for all the drivers behind him. Or as Eddy S. tweeted at 6 p.m.:

Been in the same spot for about 15 mins under western ave bridge. If you can exit do it!

I almost rolled down my window and gave him the finger, but decided against it.

So when do we start putting these jerkoffs in jail? The signs suck, but you still gotta know better. Judge LaTulippe says $30 fine payable to each driver x the number of stuck cars and seven days in jail for the driver.

EDIT: The person I really pity is whomever hailed the ambulances trying to thread through jammed traffic at (expletive) Harvard Stadium. I hope nobody died because of this.

Is the "cars only" sign standard across states? It is honestly not very helpful (and vague) to an outsider. Be as angry as you want with the driver but if he is not provided with a standardized height sign, can he make a reasonable decision?

Not really no, it's pretty unique to the situation. The first year I lived here I had a U-Haul truck and thankfully cleared the bridges, but when looking back I could've been boned big time cause it doesn't really give you a lot of processing time

And I see plenty of cars not really bother with them, either.

Don't need to fine big, just on your driving record that you are a dumbass.

That was a Gallagher routine.

I don't know why they couldn't hang the signs at the said clearance like they do in parking garages. If you're not going to make the clearance, you'll hit the hanging sign - well before you can't turn off, or hit said bridge.

They have those signs hanging at the height of the bridges! See photos here: http://www.universalhub.com/2013/bit-early-year-storrow-pool-now-closed#...

have the signs say "Low Clearance X FT No Trucks or Buses".

Because the truck and bus drivers need additional information to ignore while they follow their GPS or google maps instructions.

need ACCURATE information in text and format that they might actually notice and give some attention to.

You think they read those signs?

You think they actually know how tall their vehicles are?

Really?

The problem isn't the signs - it is a failure to pay attention to anything other than an electronic device.

The flaps are so lightweight that just a strong wind can blow them out of the way. Something more substantial like these on the A-25 in Montreal would do a better job of getting the driver's attention:

... some sort of giant roadside pinball flipper that would cast offending vehicles to the median as they passed the warnings.

Probably a non-starter.
