The lower stratus deck began this strange transformation of cloud feathers radiating from a spinning center.

An upper cloud layer glistened from the sun angle making impressive contrasts.

Well done! How do people get such fantastic lightning shots... long exposure and a tripod or sheer luck?

Long exposure and a tripod - for mine I needed an ND8 filter as well to slow down the shutter speed or the whole picture would have been "blown out" because it was still daytime/quite bright when I was shooting (all that light in the photo of the bolt that hit the Logan tower was off to my left)

Best is at night - because you can usually get your exposures up to 30 seconds (mine were 5-10 and I got one bolt out of about 30 shots - missed 3-4 good ones in between shots. Thank God for digital.)

One other trick - if you don't have a shutter release - many cameras can set for a 2 second delay before the shutter opens. That way you don't shake the camera when you release the shutter, although when you are filming storms - the breeze can still shake the camera around quite a bit.
