Cops at Landmark Center

Ryan captured the BPD squad at Landmark Center after the Super Bowl.

Police have locked down Kenmore: No cars, pedestrians being allowed in; only people in Kenmore bars being allowed onto streets - and that to leave the area. The Green Line is bypassing Kenmore station.

Something about the way they are lined up on those steps make them look like a chorus.

Freaking madrigals.

What did we spend on this Sunday night?

not funny. not even a little funny. for several reasons.

huge use of money. for which many uhub posters (but apparently not you, SG) pay.

and an investment likely made based on historic experiences that have resulted in the kind of outcomes that many uhub posters - including you, SG - would typically protect from glib, callous responses. E.g.:

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2004/10/21/colle...

Just an example.

And just saying that this particular boston resident is psyched about the pats, but also doesn't think comments such as yours are funny.

"The boys from the Boston PD choir were singing Galway Grey
And the bells were ringing out for Groundhog Day."

(with apologies to Shane MacGowan)

Really? This is a good use of police resources? We're paying overtime to what looks like 50 cops so they can stand around next to Landmark?

Uh, it's the staging area

up

Yup, Maybe if everybody behaved and didnt try to destroy property that they didnt own it wouldnt be necessary.

Then you go do it. Yeah, that's what I thought. Your taxes (which you are required to pay) are much appreciated.

Cut costs for police, spend it on the MBTA, and there will be overall fewer problems.

Not gonna happen.

Been out there since the start of the fourth quarter?!? They missed EVERYTHING!!!!!

up

Poor lads and lassies missed some televised entertainment did they?

Well, it happens every day when people go to work, and I hear they have recordings available.

And seriously, some phones were certainly broadcasting the game to the on-duty LEOs, don't you think?

Fire department? Military? Police? No, I didn't think so. You were warm at home and they were at work...in the cold and snow. Show some respect.

Someone start handing out shovels and maybe we can get some public walkways cleared.

Hey everyone. BPD Officer here.. I'd like to thank "swirlygrrl" for her condescing comment. While we do have some on the force who are quite vocally talented, we were assembled that way to receive instructions from our superior officers.

And thanks to "BostonDog" for his equally negative comment. Unfortunately we weren't able to just stand around all night, and were met with some very large, but luckily well behaved groups. I've been to a few of these now and one of the scariest moments of my life was when complete control was lost during the Red Sox riots. That's the best word I can describe what happened that night - riots. So I would take standing around to that, any day of the week.

In all honesty, who I really would like to thank is the Bostonians who felt comfortable enough to be able to greet us, respectfully, and thank us for our service. I will happily high five you. I can tell the difference between those who are condescing, from those who are sincere.

You thank me for my service, and I thank you for you civility. So, thank you. You know who you are. You should be proud right now. We are champions tonight!

Bostondog's crack about shovels bugged you? I would have thought that Boston cops had thicker skin.

up
Voting closed 0

Seriously. I can't believe they have feelings or want to defend their profession. How dare they?

up

Yeah, that crack about the city's lack of snow-removal was a real insult to law enforcement officers everywhere.

They're not paid to shovel snow.

Snarky comments from civilians tend to piss us off.

up
Voting closed 0

Well that's just tough shit for you. Sorry, but the lowly civilians are not going to kiss your ass because you think we should. You're not exempt from criticism, and it pisses us of that you think you should be. Not that there was any criticism here, Swirly's comment was a joke and not disrespectful or snarky. You're being overly sensitive.

The New England Patriots are an entertainment product, like a Broadway show.
Great cast members, hardworking people, great sales and marketing staff.

But fans are not Champions, the team members are. WTF?
If there were a playoff series for fans, then maybe.

My joke about shoveling had less to do with cops and more to do with the fact so many public walkways not in front of residences where left unshoveled after the blizzard. (Including Kenmore Sq where I work.) And for what it's worth a cop is paid about 4x what a private contractor is for basic snow removal which is why as a private citizen I get a little annoyed when the city sends out a fleet of police but not shovelers.

Not that they are useful for important tasks like moving snow out of the way.

True to form though, the news copter showed them riding the wrong way on the street. Maybe that's what bikes are for.

Dude, you're so predictable it's not funny. It really isn't. It's pathetic. You're really mentally ill, you know that?

They perform roles. I would be remiss in not challenging bicycle religious dogma! You would be disappointed, or pleased that intimidation may have worked.

Perhaps a proctologist, maybe? Impacted sticks are a bother.

Geesh. Overvalue yourself, much?

Far more firefighters die than cops, and firefighters save far more lives than cops, but I've never seen one demand tribute and servile kow-towing like your lot do as some sort of chanted mantra.

WE ARE YOUR HEROES KISS OUR ASSES ESCAPE IS FUTILE.

They love themselves almost as much as people love them. They are no different than cops actually, and no, I don't believe more of them die in he job, and I actually don't think more of them save lives, including fires.

I've seen cops and citizens save way more many people from real fires than firefighters do.

That being said, firefighters go into buildings when they know they might not make it out, that is the ultimate hero.

I don't believe more of them die in he job

According to this, firefighters are about twice as likely to die on the job as cops:

http://riderrants.blogspot.com/2014/01/mortality-risk-for-police-and.html

That's slightly more risky than being a professional athlete, but significantly less risky than jobs like landscaper or bartender.

Police and fire fatality stats always include those who die from medical problems after the fact. Take those out and you will see a different stat.

up
Voting closed 0

You mean like having half your skin burned off?

Feel free to post the stats that support your assertions.

up
Voting closed 0

I mean like the out of shape cop who dies of a heart attack, or the firefighter who smokes but blames his lung cancer on the times he had to go into a building after the fire was already out out and breath in all the smoke that was there the day before.

I know hundreds of firefighters and cops who get disability pensions for routine job risks but scam the system for personal reasons.

To get the stats, you have to read between the lines or at least have some sort of empirical observations and experience. You seem to just be using Google? That can get you some info, but not all of it.

Studies have repeatedly shown that firefighters are at a higher risk for certain types of cancer. Here's some evidence: http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/updates/upd-10-17-13.html Let me interject before someone claims that the knuckle-dragging firemen have higher rate of tobacco use; they don't. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21656838
Don't downplay it as a scam, the risk real and a lot of guys deserve this benefit.

...or the firefighter who smokes but blames his lung cancer on the times he had to go into a building after the fire was already out out and breath in all the smoke that was there the day before.

This right here is horse-shit.

And police and fire fighters are pretty bad in boston, fire fighters tend to be worse. I see it first hand.

...of what constitutes a "condescending comment". Seriously. It sounds like you've got a real bad case of Thin Blue Skin: anyone who says anything about a cop that isn't obvious, unambiguous, gushing adoration must be running you down. All that Swirl said was that the way the picture was taken, the assembled police had an amusing resemblance to a choir. How you manufactured some kind of insult from that is really beyond me. You really need to get a sense of perspective.

As someone who has devoted 14 years to serving this country, seeing some snarky comment like that from a civilian gets us fired up. If you never served, you can't understand.

If I remember correctly, Swirly is also a veteran.
