Citizen complaint of the day: Get a load of this trash

A lot of trash in the South End

This long trail of trash at Tremont and E. Berkeley in the South End has actually prompted several concerned citizens to complain this morning.

Don't worry kids - it's just the Boston Yeti foraging for food.

Looks like high end trash , in a high end neighborhood. There must be high end priced empty wine bottles in that pile.

So pick it up. I just did on Shawmut Ave. It's not hard and the city workers are not servants.

It's not hard and the city workers are not servants.

I really can't understand the point you're making here.

"Servants" is a funny choice of words. The city has employees who are paid by us, the taxpayers, to fix various problems: for example to replace burned out streetlights, to fill in potholes, or to pick up trash spills.

Using the Citizen's Connect app for its intended purpose, to help the city government dispatch those workers to places where the work needs to be done, is hardly, by any stretch of the imagination, treating the city workers as 'servants.'

These are people who are paid by the city to render services.

What, exactly, do you think that clean up crews and trash collectors do? Other than clean up these things and collect trash?

Fair enough. My point is that it is unprecedented and a little help by citizens could go a long way. I clean our block almost everyday in the good weather and sweep it on street cleaning day. I don't expect everyone to do that. I really don't. BUT, you can walk by the same litter in the same location in front of the same house for weeks and no one bothers to pick it up. A little neighborly pitching in would go a long way. But, you're right, our property taxes go to pay for these services as well as many more. It's going to be a tough year for the city.

Are we looking at the same picture above? That's not an errant Dunks cup on the curb, that looks like trash that fell off/out of a vehicle.

That's a very kind thing to do, and very neighborly, but how and why do these things happen in the first place? As the snow melts, and as trash is revealed from underneath (or falls off the top of) snowbanks, wouldn't it be sensible for the city to anticipate that and try to stay on top of the situation? And wouldn't it be nice if citizens didn't just throw their trash wherever, because fuck it? City workers aren't servants, no, but this is part of the unprecedented snow: the unprecedented way in which citizens are trashing (literally) the city. It would benefit the city to try to stay on top of it, by cleaning it up and/or issuing fines. Or something.

If there are used tampons, bloody napkins, dirty diapers, or maybe some puke, will you be volunteering to handle the mess? How about bed bug or flea infested sheets and clothes?
There are people paid to do this and equipped with gloves and a truck to actually take it somewhere after being picked up. Even if someone was kind enough to pick it up, where exactly should they put it? There isn't always a public trash can in sight.

"Not servants" Ah, so just leave it there.
Snow storms are now over, there should be no excuses from Boston public works dept.
If the city of boston does not have enough man power to clean up the the debris and dog shit off the streets, then they should start hiring for temporary help. Because when the sun starts shining in april , the dog shit will still be on miles of sidewalk throughout boston.

prompted several concerned citizens to complain this morning.

"Trash in street at intersection of State and Main" is not a complaint, it's a service request.

"Lazy trash collectors dropped bag," is a complaint.

If it were a piece or two, you could say 'pick it up yourself'. Here you've got about a dozen bags of trash.

Given they're in the center of the driving lane, chances are it's not curb trash dragged out, but more they fell out of a trash truck or pickup truck.

Looking at the case itself the city did come out and take care of it within 20 minutes - pretty good response.
