Citizen complaint of the day: Never mind the rats, what about the giant spider webs?

Giant spider webs on Waltham Street in Boston's South End

An aggrieved citizen complains about these Halloween decorations blocking access to the street on Waltham Street in the South End.

Via Gustavo, who notes that Waltham Street and Union Park Square always host a killer Halloween stroll.

But I would have just torn the frigging thing down. Or maybe some youth can just light it on fire.

The web extends 2 or 3 cars, walk a few extra feet. Pretty sure the web will be gone within the week

If you were trying to get in or out of the passenger side of your car and it was blocked by this faux spider web I am sure you would be very happy and not object at all. Yes indeed.

".that someone is festive enough to celebrate a fun holiday,"

I still want to know the sociology that turned the modern conception of Halloween from a one day children's fun day into a full fledged adult "holiday" season where more money is spent than any other holiday but Christmas. I think it may have even surpassed Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. Everybody takes it for granted now, but the transition from a kid's day to a big deal adult thing is quite a phenomenon. And yeah, I know we all knew some grown up dotty aunt or relative who "dressed up" for Halloween years ago, but it's nothing compared to now.

A day celebrating the end of the harvest was solely for kids?

I don't think so.

A day celebrating the end of the harvest was solely for kids?

You're thinking of some other holiday, maybe. Halloween was the Celtic holiday of Samhain, the beginning of the new year in the Celtic calendar, when the veil between the living and the dead is thin. The Christian church took it over and remade it as All Hallows' Eve, and November 1 became All Saints' Day. It's way too late to be an "end of harvest" festival in any of the Celtic lands.

In the US it's gone through a lot of changes over the years. It's definitely true that in post-WWII US, until comparatively recently, it was a thing for little kids, not a thing for adults.

Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced “sah-win”).
The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc such as sickness or damaged crops.

The original post said "the modern conception of Halloween". As in post WW2. It was a kid's fun day that has morphed into a New Year's Eve type season of events for adults, though the children's aspect also remains. Precious few of the grown ups wearing costumes, getting drunk, running crazy in the streets, etc are celebrating Samhain, end-of-harvest, All Hallows, All Souls or anything of the kind. I'm just curious what the cluster of causes of the rebranding from children to adult over the past 20 or so years were.

The fake cobweb Halloween decoration is not made of steel or barbed wire --- I promise it won't wound you! Apparently some people just aren't cut out for the mean streets of gentrified neighborhoods.

...because the first thing I do when I see annoying holiday decorations is report it to Citizen's Connect. Whoever took the time to text this to the city deserves a slap.

I'd have pulled it right down, the same as I do with broken lawn chairs and plastic cones stolen from the public works department. Yeah, I'm that guy.

First world problems

I HATE the expression "first world problems". I think it's possible to be grateful that you have food, shelter, freedom and security and still have legitimate concerns about quality of life issues like clean streets, adequate public transportation, and yes, whether the pricey coffee beverage you ordered was made to your specifications. "F-WP"has become a ubiqutous catch-phrase that allows people to trivialize any and all such concerns, for what seems to be the sole purpose of allowing one to feel superiority. And now you've made me miss my shuttle bus
and there won't be another one for 15 minutes.

And anyway, I'm sure if someone living in a shantytown had their shack covered in Halloween decorations in a way that made it inconvenient for them to get in and out, they'd be annoyed too. People in less developed economies get bothered by the little things too.

Why does everything need to be so PC. Give them some slack, they're doing something fun, at their expense, which everyone (except you perhaps) can enjoy. Nothing's damaged, no cars have been keyed, no eggs have been thrown. Get a life.

It's citizen's connect, bro. You'd have better luck telling Yelp reviewers to tone down their obnoxious yammering about knowing what real authentic ethnic cuisine should taste like.

I give the person an A for creativity and an A for scary effects. My position on this creative art is as long its not hazardous in any kind of way I need someone like me on fire or anything of that nature and its not blocking your ability to get out the car who cares about it it looks great it's only going to be here a week providing no one to sit down.

If I wish to get into the passenger side of a car, say hubby is driving, my way would be impeded. If I opened the passenger side door, it would hit the web (which is not really a bad thing). And, as I mentioned in a previous post, those who are in wheelchairs (or the elderly) should not have to negotiate (and many are not able to) a man made web to gain access to the passenger side of a car.

In light of new facts to this situation. And the fact that it does impede egress and entering on the passenger side of a vehicle, then it should come down.

Sounds like you're arguing a corner case. Take it down. Not like it requires a contractor or something. Bet you don't have a smile on your face very often either.

Thinking of all the cool creatures that I will meet, tonight
Ghosts and goblins and witches roaming the streets, in moonlight
Bowls of candy and goodies delicious and waiting, in store
The sound of cute little footsteps as they approach my front door,

Letting the children inside to drink beers
Razor blades hidden in Three Musketeers
Screams from the basement of kids begging to be set free
That's what, Halloween means to me

Tightening the clamps that are holding their little heads, so tight
Putting my lips to their ears as I whisper "Please, don't fight"
I promise I'll let you go home if you swear not to tell, a soul!
Well, I'll just untie these, I'm kidding, now where is my chainsaw?
Let's rock and roll!

A pinch of your brother, a teaspoon of you
With the head of your sister would make a good stew
I'd give you a taste, but your tongue's in the stew, irony
That's what Halloween means to me

Trick or treat, smell my feet
Give me something good to eat
Trick or treat, smell my feet
Give me someone, good to eat!

I would just cut through the thing to get to the passenger side of the car. Or, alternatively, if I was transporting a friend, say in a wheelchair, who needed to assess the passenger side seat.

I think the fake webbing would be better served if the Halloween enthusiast webbed his or her yard and the trees therein.

As law driving abiding Citizens of Boston, be mindful to probably drive slower this Saturday, Halloween/Harvest Day.

DRIVE SLOWER THIS SATURDAY,

Every holiday.
