DA: East Boston woman took out anger at ex by slashing a 4-year-old

Sandy Castillo, 19, was arraigned today in her hospital bed on a variety of charges including assault and battery on a child causing substantial injury for a Saturday incident in which she allegedly sliced up a 4-year-old boy and then had to be subdued with a beanbag gun when she refused to drop the knife.

Judge John McDonald imposed $35,000 bail and ordered her to wear a GPS monitor and stay away from her alleged victim and his family should she make bail, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

According to prosecutors, Castillo showed up at the Paris Street home of her former boyfriend, 17, around 7 p.m. The encounter did not go well: Castillo allegedly slapped and scratched the teen and he left.

Adults in the home then heard screams from a 4-year-old relative [of the ex] and Castillo’s threats to kill the boy, prosecutors said. The witnesses observed Castillo holding the boy with one arm while using a knife to cut his neck and quickly separated the two. They told police that Castillo made threats to harm herself and was forced into the bedroom until police arrived.

As the boy's father rushed him to the East Boston Health Center, police entered the apartment:

Upon their arrival, officers learned that Castillo was barricaded inside a bedroom and had threatened to harm herself. Officers used a ram to force the door open and observed Castillo holding a knife with a three-inch serrated blade. After she failed to comply with orders to drop the knife, officers discharged a beanbag gun, striking Castillo and causing her to drop the knife.

Castillo was arrested after a brief but violent struggle. While being placed in an ambulance for transport to Massachusetts General Hospital, she allegedly became combative and bit a Boston EMT in the upper arm, prosecutors said.

In addition to assault and battery on a child causing substantial injury, Castillo is also charged with armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery on a family or household member, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on a public employee.

Innocent, etc.

If my four-year-old was put through this, and then I read a story that characterized that incident as someone "slicing up" my daughter, I'd feel like someone was being pretty glib about a horrible trauma.

How would you have written it?

I went with "slice" because while the police use "stab" to mean any cut involving a knife, that doesn't seem like the way the rest of us would use that word.

Um, ok, I guess I would write "cut his throat" which sounds a lot more respectful at least to me.

Going to the hospital to check up on the poor little victim like that. Then making sure she gets the proper counseling at your expense. Then paying for her continued education at BBN.

Wotta guy!

To the BPD.

A prudent response to the situation with no fatalities. Nice work, fellas.

of the Boston police doing a good job handling a violent, possibly mentally ill person. There have been a few in the past few months. Kudos to them for using the bean bag guns so effectively and keeping these encounters from becoming lethal.

I can't find the chart, but Boston is among the higher cities in the nation in terms of police-involved shootings per capita...if I can find it, I'll post it in a reply.

would a mentally unstable person who violently attacks a child and threatens to harm herself be offered bail? Wouldn't she (and the public) be safer in a hospital that is equipped to deal with someone with her issues?

That she is offered bail (to be released from jail pending trial, pursuant to putting up a surety or bond) doesn't mean she couldn't also be civilly committed to a mental health facility. Two different parts of the law.
