DA: Murderer tried to evade capture by pretending to be a snow shoveler, but his sneaker prints in the snow helped give him away

A gang associate from Hyde Park was ordered held without bail today on charges he gunned down a man who really was shoveling snow on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain yesterday morning, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

According to assistant DA Ian Polumbaum, after murdering Kenneth Lamour and then shooting at a police officer who chased him, Josiah Zachery, 18, briefly evaded detection by running into backyards behind homes along Centre Street down toward the Monument. Officers who quickly joined the hunt found Zachery further down Centre, minus the black jacket witnesses at the shooting scene had seen:

He was carrying a black and yellow snow shovel and told detectives that he had been using it all morning to help residents of several neighborhoods. Witnesses who observed the defendant after he was detained all said he appeared to be the gunman except for the missing black jacket.

Police searched the yard through which the gunman had run and found sneaker prints matching the defendant’s. They also found a black jacket stuffed under the porch and a handgun believed to be the one used to kill Lamour and fire upon the pursuing officer from the snow-covered roof of an adjacent garage. Additionally, they spoke with a nearby homeowner who said his black and yellow snow shovel had just been stolen.

Innocent, etc.
