East Boston: Where Jewish caskets come from

Show Me Your Casket

The Forward's Martyna Starosta visited the New England Casket Co. in East Boston for a look at how Jewish caskets are changing. They're still all wood - workers go over caskets with a metal detector to make sure - but they're not all plain pine boxes anymore.

Nice vid....makes me think of Zydeco great Clifton Chenier who sometimes would say in a concert, "When you live, you live. When you're dead, you're gone."

When you're dead, you're boldly gone until your next hit of Khan blood, or until the next sequel, whichever comes first.

Who would want to be buried in a box that isn't lined with 100% organic natural fiber cloth and formaldehyde-free glue and padding materials? That other stuff is toxic!

Biodegradability is.

I'm planning on doing with out the casket and embalming and having a burial at sea instead. My children have requested that they be composted - buried somewhere where their remains will return to the land.

The greens are way ahead of you dear.

Until you're soylent green, you're still not green enough.

I want my ashes used for the inert packing of a 4th of July fireworks rocket.

The more environmentally questionable, the better.

Thanks Adam for the info. Always a wealth if info here.

Interesting enough I like this a lot. I'm not Jewish (lots of family is tho) but I like the idea of a plain wooden box with no frills to be buried in. I'm dead, why would I care if my coffin is titanium lined or has silk inside. Who cares? No one is ever going to see it again. Waste of money.

Curious to know how much they cost and if they would sell to someone who isn't apart of the Jewish faith.
