Franklin Park pond seems to have gotten the icky mess Jamaica Pond had

City and state health officials warned today that Scarboro Pond in Franklin Park appears to be experiencing a bloom of blue-green algae and are warning visitors to stay well away from the water - and to keep their dogs away as well.

The toxins released by the microorganism, also known as cyanobacteria, can cause a variety of ailments and even death in people or pets who consume enough of it. In a statement, the Boston Public Health Commission says:

In the event that you, your child, or your dog comes in contact with the water or an algae bloom, rinse off immediately.

Ingestion of a significant amount of toxin can cause acute gastrointestinal distress and, depending on the specific toxin, can affect the functioning of the liver, kidneys, and/or neurological systems and in severe cases can result in death.

Water samples will be tested by the state to confirm the suspected bloom.

Jamaica Pond was ruled off limits for three weeks because of an algal bloom.
