The Globe has standards, even when it comes to Cleveland

The Globe has taken down the online version of a travel story from last weekend about how Cleveland rocks and replaced it with this statement:

A recent travel story about Cleveland, Ohio, has been removed because the reporting practices did not meet Globe standards.

The article (attached below, thanks to a roving UHub Globe reader) extols Cleveland attractions the traveler should not miss and alerts us that locals call Cleveland "the Cle."

It's by Marci DeWolf, a freelancer from Greenville, SC, who wrote about saxophones in Brussels for the Globe last year.

Re-reading it, it just reads more like a PR piece from the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce than unbiased advice about the city.

There's a newfound optimism and local pride, a can-do attitude.

High-tech jobs, world-class health facilities, and a revived cultural scene, are giving this once Rust Belt city an exciting new look.

There was no actual reporting.

I would fully support Cleveland to host the Olympics in 2024. It sounds like a lovely city!

Was the article based on the hastily produced Cleveland tourism promotion video?

Seems odd to simply remove the piece entirely. Was it plagarized or something?

A city that hosts the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and its claim to fame is where "Ralphie's house from A Christmas Story" is located? I'm all in. #Cleveland2024

isn't truly serious about rock and roll. If they were, then they never would have had Radio Shack supply the sound gear for the museum.

That someone wrote a story about them that didn't go on about the river burning.

See here and here.

God that reads like one of those advertising pieces in an airplane magazine about the airline's hub city. ("Viva Detroit" in the Delta magazine, say, or "Dallas is where it's at on American, or even "The Charms of Newark" on United.)

Print media lives! For a few days, then it dies.

They should replace the article with a link to this.
