Harbor fills with diaphanous visitors

Jellyfish in Boston Harbor

Moon jellyfish are flooding Boston Harbor, moving with the tides and occasionally puffing themselves into balloon-like shapes to pulse themselves a few inches forward at a time. The large rings are their reproductive organs.

Where did all these jellyfish come from?

earlier this week--they are beautiful and as wide across as a skillet. Amazing to watch them propel themselves through the water.

...one of my fave episodes, not only for the "science" but for the uncanny background portrayal of Boston politics. Having lived here now for a number of years, I can easily imagine the Deputy Chief insisting - insisting- that the T has to be up and running by the afternoon rush...
