The Times of Israel takes a look at El Al's new Boston-Tel Aviv route and how Massport won it over areas with larger Jewish populations, such as Miami: Lots of Israeli businesses operate here and Massport did a good job convincing El Al Boston is not just some dinky little city. Among those on the first flight today: Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman.

FWIW, I'm seeing many dates over the next few weeks for under $1,000 nonstop. For instance, Sep 10 - Sep 20 is $969, and there are plenty of dates with that pricing.

How does the Israeli population of Boston compare?

The man behind the curtain on a lot (or all) of the new routes at to/from Logan, who, as the man behind the curtain, is never in any of the pictures or press releases, is a staffer at Massport called Yil. He would probably not be thrilled that I am pointing this out, but I just can't bear to see politicians and other people who are at best tangentially involved in these very difficult undertakings continue to get all of the credit.
This is yet another example of Massport quietly doing well exactly what it is supposed to do, and making the Greater Boston area a still more attractive place to live an work as a result. As I have said before, we should be looking to make more of our state government operate like Massport. While it is certainly not perfect, it is definitely better than what we get in most other areas.
[unnecessary and obvious disclosure: I know Yil and his work from a previous career.]

The fact that El Al is using 767-300's for the route probably has more to do with it. The plane's range is more suitable for a nonstop to Boston than to Miami.
What it's supposed to do?

If what you mean is to provide jobs for pols and their relatives with defined benefit pensions after ten years, I guess you're right. Unfortunately, I learned first hand how this works.
