Imagine: A Boston-based movie that doesn't involve Southie, the North End or Charlestown

Last Night in Rozzie

Ryan McDonough is trying to crowdsource a short film called Last Night in Rozzie.

McDonough, long over his days as the alcohol-infused Cuervo Man, describes the film:

When New York lawyer, Ronnie Russo, gets a surprise call from his childhood best friend with a dying wish, he apprehensively returns to the formerly beat-up Boston neighborhood of Roslindale for the first time in 25 years. On their last night together when they were both 12, after their final Little League baseball game together, Joey had proved how far he would go to protect him when Joey’s drunken father attacked them both. They haven't spoken since.

It looks like that Little League season when he was 12 was pretty important to him. He was on the Pleasant Cafe Yankees (a team name that boggles the mind) and hit .500.

Good comments, thank you! And thanks for posting this, Universal Hub!

To be clear, the feature version (which would have a feature budget) would be shot almost entirely in Rozzie. Since we are making the short version to get interest in the feature, and since we're trying desperately to raise the funds necessary to make just that, we'll be shooting our interiors in Los Angeles. But establishing exteriors will be shot in Rozzie.

I'm totally scarred by having to wear a Yankees uniform in Parkway Little League.

Are they gonna bring back the greek pastry shop for the movie?

what about Flanagans (or was it kellehers)?

going to have to do a lot of work to make Rozzie look beat-up: maybe film in Hyde Park?

Filming Roslindale in Los Angeles? That is a fail. A big fail.

There's also this on the Indiegogo page:

Location fees (we'll be shooting in and around Boston and Los Angeles)

Made the correction on the page: "we're on track to shoot in Los Angeles in February 2016, Roslindale and other parts of Boston in the spring." I would totally share your outrage as I want this to be authentic. And if we can get this made and eventually get to make the feature version, Roslindale would be our primary location for all shooting.

I was just surprised, since it seemed like the sort of thing that would include legitimate Rozzie exteriors. It's completely understandable that you need to economize on the sound stage or other interior work. This looks like a great story, I really hope you get the funding and ultimately make the feature length version.

Best of luck!

Ha! Thanks. I meant I would be outraged. And I was responding more to the comments about it being a fail. Thanks so much for the encouraging words, Henry.

I left Southie because I was so tired of the Hollywood stereotypes that made it an unwelcoming place for anyone who wasn't white. Roslindale is a diverse, welcoming family neighborhood. Please don't make the plot sinister.

the rozzie I know is a very interesting place - immigrants living next to aging blue-collar people living next to hipsters/yuppies with kids living next to ex-JP/somerville-activist types... You often get a prius, mercedes, a cargo-bicycle, and a beater on same block.

and I'm not sure what to make of this this twee british song about rozzie:
