It's Robert E Lee Day in Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi

Today, in addition to celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the states of Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi celebrate Robert E Lee Day. He is "best known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War from 1862 until his surrender in 1865.."

The Confederate States of America was a secessionist state existing from 1861–65. It was originally formed by seven slave states in the Lower South region of the United States.

Does anyone know if Robert E. Lee Day was established before or after the national holiday for Martin Luther King Jr.?
