Long Island bridge goes kaboom

Brad Tatum videoed the contractor's explosion that took out three segments of the Long Island bridge around 11 a.m.

I'm sure all the lead paint flakes will do wonders for the health of the sea life and those which consume it.

How much filter-feeding bottom-feeding sea life is harvested from Boston Harbor? Would you eat it?

Well, there's the trust thing...
...but in fact, I don't eat shellfish unless the person selling/serving it will tell me the source. If they're lying, that's another matter.
As compared to all the lead paint

true dat. Also they have (for what it's worth) the booms out there with presumably the sediment curtains hanging down off of them, to help contain debris from the demo. There's more than enough ka-ka-doo out there to worry about that the bridge is probably not that huge of a concern, relatively speaking.
When the old elevated
When the old elevated expressway bridge was demolished over the Charles River it had to be tented to remove all contaminated paint first to keep it out of the waterway. Same for the work on the Longfellow and Tobin bridges.
So why does this bridge get super special permission to endanger workers and the environment?
Perhaps it has something to do
with the booms in the water around the bridge.

They have silt booms out, hopefully they catch most of the junk. People clam all over Quincy and commercial lobstermen have traps all over the harbor. If you are eating lobster in Boston, it very well may be from the harbor.

Its times like this I'm glad I don't like much seafood (yes I'm weird like that as a native new englander!)..
I'm sorry.. but EW. I know the harbor has cleaned up a lot and it is safe to eat now but I just can't stop thinking about that discharge pipe that runs from Deer Island deep into the harbor............barf.
(yes I know its seldom used anymore but still, we pumped sewage and sludge into the harbor for decades prior.... just ew)

There are some people at Marina Bay that keep traps at their slips in the marina. If you are familiar w/ Marina Bay; there is a large break wall enclosing most of the marina. Not to mention; some of the boats are directly depositing waste into the water. So nasty.

You mean the pipe that goes 9.5 miles out into Mass Bay from Deer Island? You're worried about that?
The harbor is clean enough to swim in 90% of the time and when it's not, it's due to heavy rainfall washing dog turds into the water, along with whatever else we've all put on the streets.

Silt booms are out now to collect the junk. There is no trench yet. It will be monitored when they begin working on the trench. I'm sure that will take a bit, they have a lot to clean up.
Lead paint
I went under the bridge last summer on my boat and I can tell you there wasn't any paint left on this bridge.
Rehabbed in 1990-1991
There is reference to this rehab and abatement in the environmental impact filing - although they still say that there is lead paint and asbestos (due to the utility lines) to contend with.

If you were going under as a car was going over the bridge, you could get some rust in the eyes. No paint chips though.
