Marty Walsh has his first opponent for 2017

Mary Franklin of Roslindale says too many people are suffering the effects of crime in Boston and that she's running for mayor to do something about that.

Franklin is founder of the Women Survivors of Homicide Movement - her husband, Melvin, was shot to death 20 years ago while trying to stop a robbery; his killer was never identified.

She also points to education - she's in favor of raises for Boston public-school teachers - as one of her key issues, along with senior citizens.

Franklin holds a meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 6 at MAMLEO, 61 Columbia Rd. in Dorchester.

Spelling, grammar and punctuation ought to be minimum requirements.

Don't see too many homicide survivors.

I was looking at the mystery novels in a bookstore and the copy on the back of one of them said something like, "Jack Detective was on top of the world - until he made two fatal mistakes!", and I was impressed because that's one more than most people get to make.

....as was explained under her picture. If a close family member of mine were murdered, I'd consider myself a homicide survivor too.

That said I did a double take when I first read the term as well

As people who have lost a loved one are described as the deceased's "survivors", I can see where the phrase comes from. It's awkward, but do you really think it's more awkward and less clear than "survivor of a homicide victim"?

"Widow of a Homicide Victim" or even "Homicide Widow"

We've gotten ads for certain city events, composed by our Mayor and/or his wife, that say:

YOUR INVITED

... among other grammar and spelling errors.

These are the people in charge of the schools. They are also products of the schools, as is this lady. To pick too hard at what she wrote is to not admit that she has already been cheated once.

That said, everyone needs an editor or proofreader. We had a PTO leader who would circulate her e-mails to other parents for marked corrections until she learned what she should have been taught.

Because if it was the mayor of a certain small city formerly known as Mistick, I have interacted with that person and know that to get something that says YOUR INVITED is something to be expected.

Medford. Yes, Medford.

There is a clear old/young split on this, too. Many parents noticed that, by fifth grade, the kids were being expected to write at a level that was considerably more proficient than they were expected to produce in high school.

Kind of sad if you think about it, but a sign that the whole MCAS thing did bring some change (even if the sudden implementation was messed up).

It would be nice if most politicians didn't list their qualifications starting with "Mother/Father". I understand they are trying to relate but there is little correlation between ones ability to govern and ones ability to reproduce.

One is fairly difficult to do correctly whereas the other is difficult to avoid if not careful.

You don't need to have a kid to be understanding of the problems parents face or address the problems with the school system. Conversely, just because you have a kid in school doesn't mean you have the insight or ability to improve an enormous, complex, and expensive institution.

That said, I wish her the best of luck. The more Marty has to sweat the better.

I feel this way about many issues.

Too many people opt for not getting involved. At least she's put her name out there. This is better than everyone else and their "gee we should do something about...[insert issue here]...attitude.".

And far better than those who snark at her grammar while sitting on their dead asses.

....but I am DEFINITELY in favor of senior citizens getting a raise.

up

Ah, gotcha. I read that to say that senior citizens were one of her key issues. I thought it was about time someone did something about all the senior citizens in this city.

sandwich sign policy? That's the biggest issue in this city, right?

I assume that she means a loved one was murdered and she has had to bear that pain, but there has to be a better term for this than an oxymoronic phrase.

Mary's organization is part of a network of organizations that represent Homicide Survivors around the city of Boston.

It is an unfortunate burden of a title but common nonetheless.

I get it - it is a term used by a specific group, even if it is confusing to those not in the group.

I'm very glad that I'm confused by it, then, as it means that I'm not in their group (I've lost kin to violence, but not close kin). I guess "grieving (relative)" has given way to survivorship. That is probably meant to signify "grieving person doing something about the problem".

The Messiah, a black baby girl, will be miraculously born to a gay male couple.

That would be pretty obvious evidence of divine intervention, no?

and it is a brave thing to do this. She has a message and is passionate about it. It is not an easy thing to open oneself up to all sorts of snarky comments in this age of the internet. Kudos to her, grammar mistakes and all.

What does she plan to do about gangs and the supply of drugs for them to deal and guns for them to shoot?

You could ask her yourself, either via E-mail or at her open-house thing in a couple weeks.

I read an article about how she slept on the floor at the police station since she was frustrated they didn't catch the killer. I liked her until I read that. If her mission is to clean up the streets then she needs to work with/respect police investigations.
