The Globe's Andrew Ryan reports police officers will be instructed to order down anyone they see atop a snow pile during tomorrow's Patriots victory parade.
Mayor Walsh says, tomorrow at the Patriots parade the police will enforce a no standing on Snowbank RULE! SO Stand on shorter people, cars, the homeless, large dogs, electric boxes or step ladders cause snowbanks could break! If you damage a snowbank you WILL have to pay for it! #BeResponsible
...I see a snow FORT. So, bring on the folding entrenching tools, climb to the top, build a nice crown. Dig down, dig more than one exit. Obliterate your steps. Stock up on snowballs.
Dare them to come. Dare them.
If tomorrow's commute is anything like today, they won't need to worry about people climbing on the snow banks since no one will be able to get in to see the parade to begin with.
No problem , Martin , think I will pass on this extravaganza, not sure of the walk up from South Station. Maybe they will have a shindig in Foxberg in better weather , cheerleaders and all the fixings. Say you to this, Krafty ?
Mayoral elections are in off years - that's by design so that the incumbents can rely on the City's most serious and loyal voters to the current administration. Putting it in with all those other elections just invites ingrates that might not be inclined to vote for the incumbent while they are voting for governors and congresspeeps and senators. Plus think of all the extra campaign materials you'd have to send out to people who only vote in even years or every four years. And think of the children...
The odd-year rule allows local leaders to run for higher office without vacating their seat. Observe how Stephen Murphy has run for every office imaginable, while still staying on the city council.
I think Barros is in a good position to run in the next election. I think progressives will be all set with Walsh and I don't know that Walsh will have the same support from the minority community that he did when it was him vs. a different white guy.
Important detail- I thought he was a decent candidate for policy reasons, not pigmentation reasons, and most of what I read about his positions, he's very far from the Rivers/Wall 'what's in it for me' view of public life. He definitely knows more about economics and community development than Walsh does.
I know a lot of people are disappointed we didn't elect a more entertaining mayor, but is that cause enough to leap onto every word he utters, or attack every decision he makes and declare him unfit/unworthy to lead. I'm sure before long he will make a genuine blunder, and then all you brilliant minds out there can mercilessly attack him, whether he deserves it or not. Why dilute the effectiveness of legitimate complaints with all this petty whining?
People gave Walsh a lot more slack before the Olympic criticism gag order and the firing of a city worker for protesting on their own time and giving the nod to space savers. I am sure others can point to less recent public relations and policy blunders as well.
The only reason I voted for the guy was because he was slightly less charter school friendly than Connolly, did not vote for him in the primary.
to insist that a new Long Island bridge be constructed within a year. Minnesota did that with a much larger and more complex structure, we should be able to do the same. And stating "but the Long Island Bridge hardly serves anyone" or "but we NEED to do pointless "environmental" studies", are not valid excuses NOT to replace an existing bridge with a new structure.
Quincy was already blocking REPAIRS to the existing structure! How does the mayor simply declare that a bridge will be built when it is partly in another city?
You actually think that City employee should have remained employed by the City after that stunt? Protesting is one thing. Stopping traffic, costing 100s of thousands of dollars, breaking laws and endangering lives is very different. That person did deserve to be fired.
Regarding the Olympic gag order, I agree that's un-American but please do yourself and us all a favor by not comparing the two.
I agree he should have told the players, LEAVE if you want to LEAVE we are having the Parade Thursday. He could have asked Bob Kraft to appeal directly to the team and I'm sure the majority would have listened. Patriots could have come up with plenty of options and maybe a few players would have left but that would have been the players loss.
You think Marty Walsh should royally fuck up as much as possible so he loses the next election and then he can become Chief Justice of the MA Supreme Court?*
*Nobody will get this unless they read Bilandic's Wikipedia entry. Just trying to steer folks there with an enticing tidbit of speculation!
Like when officers ordered down all those kids that had climbed on top of bus stop enclosures during the Bruins parade... only to be shrugged off until one very angry officer hopped up there too. Can't wait to see how this unfolds!
Not to be "that guy" but is there a legal justification for this? I don't recall seeing any snow bank standing mentioned in any MGLs or city ordinances.
I might be more useful if the Mayor spent his time worrying about snow removal instead of who is standing on a snow bank! This morning, no roads were plowed in the South End but Boylston Street (of course that's where the parade will be) was free and clear. I guess we now know where Mahhty's priorities stand.
No roads were plowed in the South End? I find it difficult to believe that the neighborhood of sign font crybabies, and double-wide stroller pushing nincompoops would give City Hall a pass on unplowed roads.
I walked to work in the S.E. this morning along plowed streets. I went out for lunch and saw plowed streets. And I am looking out the window right now at a plowed street. Which is why I can say with certainty that ALL of the streets of the the S.E. did not go unplowed, as the kookie crybaby claimed.
THAT is the reason it can't be true.
If you had evidence they had plowed, you should have said so. Your earlier post just made an invalid inference about plowing based on your stereotypes of South End residents.
The city can't ticket or fine you for being on a snowbank, but if it's on city property, a cop can give you a legitimate order to descend from the snowbank in the interest of public safety. You can be arrested for disobeying such an order.
...so much hand-wringing on uhub lately. It's a parade, people! If you can't handle it, then stay home and watch it on tv. Or, don't watch it at all! Sheesh.

No worries
Nobody will be able to make it into town anyway.

hmm
Not sure I've seen the "no standing on snowbank" law enforced lately.
Is that because there's
Is that because there's always such huge snowbanks?
Cap, where you see a snow bank...
...I see a snow FORT. So, bring on the folding entrenching tools, climb to the top, build a nice crown. Dig down, dig more than one exit. Obliterate your steps. Stock up on snowballs.
Dare them to come. Dare them.
Use the silence of the trains to your advantage.

Two words:
"One term".
Glad to see I am not the only
Glad to see I am not the only one who voted for Connolly.
Barros 2018
I think he's out of this administration next year to get some clearance from Walsh.
Ummm.....2017?
I think you mean 2017.
Mayoral elections are in off years - that's by design so that the incumbents can rely on the City's most serious and loyal voters to the current administration. Noted
I blame these distracting children in my house who will apparently never go to school again.
Well
At least you WERE thinking of the children - kinda, sorta?
The odd years
The odd-year rule allows local leaders to run for higher office without vacating their seat. Observe how Stephen Murphy has run for every office imaginable, while still staying on the city council.
Im sure...
Since Boston is a majority "minority" City...then Barros should already have won!
Lol...
Ahhh yes, that ol 'chestnut.
HAhaaha
He only got 8% of the Vote, ya Barros 2017!
Whatever
I think Barros is in a good position to run in the next election. I think progressives will be all set with Walsh and I don't know that Walsh will have the same support from the minority community that he did when it was him vs. a different white guy.

Because the guy up the arse
Because the guy up the arse of the schools wouldn't put out any of this "think of the children" crap I'm sure.
it gets old

Already Happened
People gave Walsh a lot more slack before the Olympic criticism gag order and the firing of a city worker for protesting on their own time and giving the nod to space savers. I am sure others can point to less recent public relations and policy blunders as well.
The only reason I voted for the guy was because he was slightly less charter school friendly than Connolly, did not vote for him in the primary.
Yes, exactly this:

Also of note:
Not to mention his refusal

And stating "but the Long Island Bridge hardly serves anyone" or "but we NEED to do pointless "environmental" studies", are not valid excuses NOT to replace an existing bridge with a new structure.
How does that work?
Quincy was already blocking REPAIRS to the existing structure! How does the mayor simply declare that a bridge will be built when it is partly in another city?

You actually think that City employee should have remained employed by the City after that stunt? Protesting is one thing. Stopping traffic, costing 100s of thousands of dollars, breaking laws and endangering lives is very different. That person did deserve to be fired.

One name every mayor should know
"Bilandic".
(Look him up)
Let Me See If I Follow The Logic...

Bilandic
Never knew Bilandic became an Illinois Supreme Court -- it happened after I left Illinois -- and quit following Illinois politics.
I actually did meet Bilandic -- who visited Hyde Park -- something Papa Daley had not done -- as he seemed to really loathe our neighborhood.
Comical

climb a snow bank...
Fall in.
These piles have been moved around for a couple days which means theres air pockets, which means you CAN FALL IN.
As much as I think Darwin should win out, its a good call by Maaahty.
Glad everyone wants to get cynical about this.
Isn't everything frozen solid now?
It's been subfreezing for days.
Ron...
Did you get those TPS reports i sent you?
...Back to da cubicle.
Too Simple
It's the Patriots. Have them deflated.

It would be nice if the Mayor...
I might be more useful if the Mayor spent his time worrying about snow removal instead of who is standing on a snow bank! This morning, no roads were plowed in the South End but Boylston Street (of course that's where the parade will be) was free and clear. I guess we now know where Mahhty's priorities stand.
I think you're exaggerating just a tad
No roads were plowed in the South End? I find it difficult to believe that the neighborhood of sign font crybabies, and double-wide stroller pushing nincompoops would give City Hall a pass on unplowed roads.
You find it difficult to believe...
So it can't possibly be true.
No, stupid.

If you had evidence they had plowed, you should have said so. Your earlier post just made an invalid inference about plowing based on your stereotypes of South End residents.
My Jeepers you...
need new glasses.
You must have been in another neighborhood
because if you'd been in the South End, you know what many of here are referring to.
Oh, also you must
be one of those low rent types because you think the SE is only crybabies and double-wide strollers. What a troll.
What's the rule about space savers for the parade?
If I go to the parade route tonight and shovel out a space for myself, can I put a space saver there for Wednesday?
What I want to see
A reporter standing on top of a snow pile reporting on the mayor's ban on standing on top of snow piles.
I'm sure there's a good
I'm sure there's a good reason, but this just comes across as pissy.
Anybody know....
Which MGL would this be a violation of? I've searched but can find nothing relating to snowbanks.
https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/SearchResults
MGL Escape is Futile!
The Mayor made it up, now the cops will make it up, too.
Selectively, I'll bet.
The city can't ticket or fine
The city can't ticket or fine you for being on a snowbank, but if it's on city property, a cop can give you a legitimate order to descend from the snowbank in the interest of public safety. You can be arrested for disobeying such an order.

...so much hand-wringing on uhub lately. It's a parade, people! If you can't handle it, then stay home and watch it on tv. Or, don't watch it at all! Sheesh.
but, but....
what else can people be OUTRAGED about today?
What about walking on them?
What about walking on them? Seems like that's the only way to get around right now.
What about crossing the street?
Is it still okay to climb over snow piles to cross the street? 'Cuz unless they start shoveling in earnest, that's kind of our only option.
Is climbing
on the traffic light poles for a better vantage point still OK? Because I see that fairly often at parades.
People stood on the small snow bank on south side of Boylston
near Berkeley Street, without anyone bothering them.
Nobody stood on the huge snowbank on the north side there.
