Never mind China and California: Dunkin' Donuts still expanding in downtown Boston

The arrival of artisanal European and Japanese coffee in downtown Boston has done nothing to shake our addiction to Dunkin' Donuts, apparently. The Boston Licensing Board decides tomorrow whether to grant a food-serving license to a brand-new Dunkin' Donuts at 89 Broad St. in the Financial District - four months after it approved a new Dunkin' Donuts on Washington Street.

At a hearing this morning, franchisee Sean Sullivan's lawyer, Lesley Hawkins, said he is seeing "increasing demand" at his other shops in the downtown area - to the point where he felt he needed to open a new outlet.

Hawkins' comments came in response to a question by board Chairwoman Christine Pulgini on "the public need for a donut shop in this area."

Sullivan already owns more than 40 Dunk's franchises in the Boston area.

For better or worse, the DD around the corner on High St. usually has a line out the door.

$3:19 for a 16oz mediocre coffee?

“There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.”

the fact that his last name was not on those signs at Jeb's announcement?

To run a clip of Jeb announcing his run for president, followed by W's speech shown above.

I would imagine it sums up the majority of the electorate.

but at this point, what difference does it make?

that he has to get the nomination first. It will be difficult for a GOP contender to do that and court Latino voters at the same time. Fluent Spanish and a Mexican-born wife won't change that. Shaking the Etch-a-Sketch for the general election is hard to do these days.

I'd feel bad for him, knowing he's not a nutcase on immigration, but for me, the crux of this election is who gets to nominate the next couple of Supreme Court justices. Given Congressional dynamics I don't expect to change anytime soon, that has far greater long-term ramifications than any policy initiatives our next executive might hope to accomplish. In that context, it's hard to imagine my voting for any Republican, even a relatively reasonable, sane one.

... are planning to spend over 2 billion dollars this election in support of right wing candidates. Plenty of money there for lighting innumerable fires -- and you can bet they will all be lit....

It was hard not to, as all manner of commentators were on about that for at least the day after the announcement. The standard response to the inevitable question "are you trying to distance yourself from your brother?", which I also heard a bunch of times, was "Jeb's been doing this since the early 90s."

My early assessment - Jeb's ability to speak Spanish so well should not be discounted. It might seem superficial to some, but it's going to pick off a lot of voters who aren't given a good reason to go for anyone else.

Hispanic voters are the LEAST likely to vote against their best interests. Speaking Spanish won't play with them. They know better - and vote better.

Don't forget this classic.

1) You aren't just buying coffee...you're buying hipness, cachet, status...you don't want to be seen with a 7-11 coffee cup in your hand, do you?! Imagine the stares you'd get! Now the 3 bucks and change doesn't look that bad ;) ... it's like buying expensive vodka, same difference.

2) Anything Japanese is over-priced. This is because Japanese culture, food, coffee, tea, candy, hello kitty book bags, have cachet.

Ill worry about hips in another 20 years.

I alternate between Dunkins and Starbucks depending on my mood and whether I want to deal with the latest new recruits behind the counter. (Its amazing how many times they can screw up a simple coffee).

Starbucks is like $2:40 for a 20oz. $3 including tip.

I'm not stretching to $4 when its not even that good.

And to my 40 something gay friend with the Hello Kitty Tattoo - You look like an idiot. There - I said what everyone in the office thinks.

89 Broad St is the Hilton so after *years* of having their commercial space sit empty, *that's* what they are putting there? I guess High St., Broad/State, and aquarium aren't enough (all are less than .2mi from 89 Broad).

Though I am not surprised...the Hilton has already massacred the original brickwork of their building. I suppose an orange/pink sign cant be much worse.
