New Boston school buses no longer blow diesel fumes at kids in wheelchairs

BPS yesterday rolled out 86 new school buses that run on propane instead of diesel fuel.

Kim Rice, assistant superintendent of operations, told the School Committee tonight that BPS concentrated on replacing older and smaller buses that serve students in wheelchairs.

She said BPS chose those buses specifically because wheelchair lifts in buses are in the rear, meaning students used to have to breathe in diesel fumes while waiting to get on buses.

"What comes out of that pipe now is water, no more of that awful diesel exhaust," she said.

Best story title yet of the year. Bostonians, we are definitely on an upward arc!

How many wheelchair bound kids are there in BPS?

Clean buses are great for everyone. It just seems odd to sell it as a special-needs solution.

They're going to be buying a bunch of these buses. They decided to dedicate the first batch to kids who were more likely to be in a situation where they would be breathing the stuff in.
