Parkway group sets up scholarship fund in honor of fallen local firefighter

Kennedy

Parkway in Motion has set up a scholarship in honor of Boston Firefighter Michael Kennedy, who died last year along with Lt. Ed Walsh while battling a 9-alarm fire in the Back Bay.

Kennedy, a Roslindale native, was an active member of the group.

The $5,000 scholarship will go to a Roslindale or West Roxbury student in grades 6-8, who goes to a school that charges tuition. Applicants have to submit:

A form of artwork honoring either the Boston Fire Department or our Military.

A 1-2 page essay describing what community service and service to others means to you. This needs to be handwritten by the applicant. We will not take typed submissions.

Feb. 6 is the deadline to send them to

Parkway In Motion
P.O. Box 320399
West Roxbury MA, 02132

The scholarship winner will be announced at a Feb. 28 fundraiser at the Irish Social Club in Boston.

the student needs to go to a school that charges tuition. Couldn't the student bank the money for college if they are in public school?

Its a scholarship, not a grand prize giveaway. Scholarships are meant to be applied towards education, in this case middle school students or freshmen in high school. Most scholarships available are for college, so its actually nice to see Parkway In Motion using the funds for grade school kids.

Don't know whats so hard to comprehend.

I think its great! Lots of parents who live in the Parkway (and boston) send their kids to private school - not out of luxury either - I am NOT here to get in to a Public School discussion.

I think its great! Parkway in Motion puts on great events for the kids and they are usually free - so for them to give out some money to benefit kids - sounds like a class act in my book! See you on the 28th

Also - if the funds went into a savings account - it would have to be disclosed when the do their FAFSA that they received a scholarship.

Solid group of young adults doing the right thing in their community.

If you want to start an organization that gives scholarship money for future secondary education, I, and many others, would fully support it.
