Roslindale could be on verge of getting not one but two coffee shops

Old Christos market in Roslindale

Old Greek market new coffee shop in Roslindale?

Roslindale looks set to rejoin cafe nation with the potential opening of two coffee shops, one right in Roslindale Square, the other a couple blocks away.

In the Keep Roslindale Quirky Facebook group, Lauren Cooperstein Corduck reports that PS Gourmet Coffee, which has outlets in South Boston and Dorchester, will be moving into the former Vouros pastry shop at Washington and Poplar streets:

I met the owner recently as I was walking home from the Square. He said that the permitting process is underway.

Meanwhile, the Green T Coffee Shop on Huntington Avenue, Mission Hill, is planning a fall opening for its new outlet at South and Walter streets. The shop does not specify which of the vacant storefronts it's moving into, but the long vacant Christos market recently had its new "For Lease" signs taken down.

Although Roslindale Square has several places to get a cup of coffee, it has not had a dedicated coffee house since Cafe Select closed in 2013. That space remains vacant.

This is the best news! Hopefully it does well and spurs some cleanup/beautification in that stretch of South from Walter/Walworth. This and the new Fallon playground...everything's coming up Rozzie.

His store looks right onto the former Christos. Anything is better than a closed and grated store.

I'm more excited about this news than Tony moving his awesome butcher shop closer to our spot. A cafe addition to the square would be fantastic. The PS Gourmet website is kinda interesting - has anyone actually been to one of their other outposts?

I just heard about Tony's moving from some folks last weekend. Would someone be so kind as to point me to more information about this?

Thanks in advance!

Tony and his landlord got into a tiff over when the latter told the former about his plans to add two floors to the building that houses Tony's and Redd's. Proved irreconcilable, I guess, because Tony found space down Washington Street (an old dry cleaner's just before Metropolitan). I don't think he's set a specific date for moving yet, but there were some guys doing some cleanup work in there a couple weeks back.

Thank you for this news about Tony's! That is right near us and we have been wondering what is going in there. There's been a lot of work going on in that location.

My spouse and I just this morning were lamenting that there is not good coffee readily available in our neighborhood without taking a hike. We were thinking of asking if the owner of the small grocery store nearby on South Street was interested in carrying some good coffee. This is wonderful neighborhood news. It was said before, but "Woo-Hoo"!!!

...how this is keeping rozzie quirky?
just seems like an extension of jp

But given that it is irreversibly gone, what's wrong with having the spot turn into a coffee shop?

For people who don't actually like coffee.

If Dunkin Donuts still tastes too much like coffee to you, we're your guys

I got carried away by the thought of a nice coffee shop nearby.

But saying this, we made the deliberate choice to not live in JP 10 years ago. We love the square and the more sedate environment, however, that doesnt nix not wanting good coffee and a pleasant place to sit and chat with neighbors, or just an escape out the door to a different environment.

I look forward to new restaurants opening, the brewery, and other shops. A vital neighborhood doesnt mean it is 'like' JP - God forbid.

You probably mean the Craft Brew Cellar, which is a chain retail store that will be selling packaged beer, but will not be a brewery, a brew pub, nor even a brewing supplies store.

While I'll be happy to see them open, it's not like there's a lack of nearby places to find excellent craft beers (Blanchard's in WRox has a very good selection, and Macy's and even little Nicks's regularly carry some decent craft labels).

Now an honest-to-goodness brew pub in Rosi - that would be something to really celebrate!

Chance's?
Superb beers on offer.

The owners and their staff are good people, and they really have significantly upped the quantity of interesting beers. But fundamentally, it's still a multi-purpose liquor shop with very limited stock space. As a neighborhood business fan, I rate them very highly, but as a beer fan, I'm pretty excited for a larger and dedicated craft beer business. Right now I make the majority of my purchases at Blanchard's and Street Car. Coming soon, no need to leave Roslindale for an awesome beer selection. That sounds pretty good to me.

it's not a coffee shop - they pump out coffee-flavored sugar-water in ACTUAL BUCKETS. definitely NOT the kind of coffee shop that people around here have been pushing for. Green T will do a lot better.
