Tranquility in the city

One of the docks on Turtle Pond in Stony Brook Reservation this afternoon - during the two minutes when the wind stopped and the surface of the pond was fairly calm.

nice....
...just biked by there on my way downtown this morning and saw the same view. a real gem.
A wonderful spot
though probably a little chilly for swimming right now.
Is swimming allowed?
Can you swim in the pond? It's not specified on the DCR web page-apparently there is a pool at the reservation?
Technically, I think no
But people swim in the pond all the time - the dock in the photo even has a ladder on it (it's a bit of a hike from the nearest parking, though, so you tend to see more people on the dock right off Turtle Pond Parkway or Enneking Parkway, or whatever it is they call the road that goes from Washington Street to Readville).
The pool is in the reservation, but further down near the Readville end. It's an outdoor, pool, though. If you still want to go swimming now, the closest pools are the Draper Pool in West Roxbury and the Flaherty Pool in Roslindale, well, and the YMCA pool in Hyde Park.
There are ladders on both
There are ladders on both docks, and lots of swimmers in warm weather, no matter what the rules say. For a family-friendly swim, stay on the road side. The far side gets more alcohol, weed, and motorcycles.
Thanks
I will keep this in mind for our next outdoor swimming season. I swim indoors five days a week (usually) but didn't do any freshwater swimming this summer (sigh).
What is wrong with
What is wrong with motorcycles ?
Nothing wrong with
Nothing wrong with motorcycles, per se. But I get pretty annoyed when they're illegally driven on the gated paths in Stony Brook Reservation. I have reported them to the DCR multiple times, but there is no enforcement. Drive down Enneking/Turtle Pond Parkway on any given summer evening, and you'll see people blatantly offloading quads and dirtbikes off their pickups and riding them around the gates and into the park.
Always seems pretty mellow
when I've been there but yes--always a lot of tattoos and occasionally pot and musical instruments. It's nice though. It's not a pristine swimming hole but the water's great--it feels like a nice getaway not far out of the city.
Even better, in the city
We can see a bit of the reservation from our kitchen window - just past the golf course :-).
Also, use an abundance of
Also, use an abundance of caution before diving or jumping off the docks, especially early in the season. All kind of crap gets dragged out of the water in spring: old extension ladders, bike frames, chairs...
Stony Brook offers a great
Stony Brook offers a great escape for anyone who lives in the city! It isn’t far, and it can offer us some peace and tranquility. Even though Boston is a great place to live, it’s nice to get out of the city from time to time.
